The U.S. Internal Revenue Service will lay off about 6,700 employees on Thursday, in a restructuring that could strain the tax-collecting agency’s resources during the critical tax-filing season, a person familiar with the matter said.

The workers being cut are probationary employees who have typically been at the agency for less than one to two years, and enjoy fewer protections than longer-term workers. The IRS has a total of roughly 17,000 probationary employees.

The reductions at the IRS come amid a broader slashing of personnel across the federal government at the directive of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who is spearheading an unprecedented effort to shrink the bureaucracy.

Like other agencies, the IRS was ordered last week by the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees federal hiring, to dismiss all probationary employees

Yeah, I get that. Hopefully, that’s just the beginning.

The way I see it, the federal bureaucracy is a hibernaculum, you lift up a rock and discover a nest of vipers!

I’ve worked with the top level of the IRS and the Treasury Department Attorneys for 40 years. I was a liaison between the CPA association and the IRS. Most of my contacts have long since retired, but I still have friends that meet with them on a regular basis.

I really feel bad for the current IRS field staff as they keep getting jerked around. The employee attitude toward the IRS is horrible, but they keep quiet about it.

I had to pay a small fortune because I had a bunch of interest income. Went ahead and paid my due to be done with it.

My wife said I should have waited until April 15th in case the IRA was abolished and then we would own nothing.

Not sure that is going to happen.

If you add Obama and Clinton, it’s the majority.

The problem is that the Clinton folks are the one’s doing the hiring.

only 73,000 to go from the 80K hired a few years ago.

THEN you start rebaslining the IRS.

My ss check went up 30 bucks so we are both in the same situation. I have been trying to find a financial adviser who can handle the big numbers but no luck so far.

Look at it this way - you'll be able to splurge and get a couple of dozen eggs for Easter this year! :)
