IRS to lay off 6,700 employees on Thursday

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service will lay off about 6,700 employees on Thursday, in a restructuring that could strain the tax-collecting agency’s resources during the critical tax-filing season, a person familiar with the matter said.

The workers being cut are probationary employees who have typically been at the agency for less than one to two years, and enjoy fewer protections than longer-term workers. The IRS has a total of roughly 17,000 probationary employees.

The reductions at the IRS come amid a broader slashing of personnel across the federal government at the directive of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who is spearheading an unprecedented effort to shrink the bureaucracy.

Like other agencies, the IRS was ordered last week by the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees federal hiring, to dismiss all probationary employees

a restructuring that could strain the tax-collecting agency’s resources

An enormous amount of taxes are now paid via computer program and submitted electronically. A simple AI system can analyze these taxes and at least 10% of the staff can be let go. It's not like 25+ years ago when it was all paper.

Yessir, I've heard of them. I have several of the former and at least one of the latter in my family tree. They were agents of the State of North Carolina Department of Revenue, not the feds. I neglected to make the distinction in my comment.

“””Good. I already got my refund. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my $69 windfall. I don’t want to spend it all in one place.””””

My ss check went up 30 bucks so we are both in the same situation. I have been trying to find a financial adviser who can handle the big numbers but no luck so far.

My daughter is currently employed by the VA.
She works remotely. She has six people working under her.
They also all work remotely.
Her boss told her last week to come up with a recommended list of who they should fire.
She has only been with the VA for a little over a year.
So, she might be looking for a job soon too.

My younger brother worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for his entire career. He was at The Big House in Lewisburg, PA. Former home of several Gambino family members and even Jimmy Hoffa once.

He retired about two years ago at the old age of 56. He started straight out of college at 22. So, he had 34 years in and could retire. His wife retired at 49. That was due to health reasons though.

I am sure IF my brother was still working there he would have retired with the original offer.
FYI, the reason he retired was that the Assistant Warden(his immediate boss)was a DEI hire. She was an incompetent African American woman. The only potential for his advancement would have been to move to another prison because she was not going anywhere. She had hit the glass ceiling because she was too stupid to ever become a warden.
So, he decided to retire instead of continuing to work under someone who was unqualified.

Eliot Ness was a federal “revenuer”, also known as a T-man, agent of the treasury department’s Bureau of Prohibition in Chicago. Following the end of Prohibition he was assigned as an “alcohol tax Agent” in the mountains of Southern Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.

All these probationary employees were hired on Biden’s watch. Government hiring propped up Joe’s fake job numbers that he crowed about.

“Not enough.”

Really. Biden installed 88,000 gun-toting IRS thugs. Fire 95,000 employees.

According to the article they were mostly probationary.

They were the last hired, the fed gov goes by seniority.....”last in...first out”

If we moved to the Flat Tax, Steve Forbes post card Form 1040 we would not need more than a few thousand at IRS.
