From my seat at Super Bowl LIX, the crowd’s disparate reactions to Swift and Trump felt like a chilling microcosm of our culture.
…It was just a football game, people might say. Or Swift—who is famously dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce—got heckled by some rowdy Eagles fans excited to be at the biggest sporting event of the year. So? Don’t take it so seriously.
…Perhaps the moment would have felt less visceral if not for the fact that less than an hour earlier the crowd had exploded—this time with applause—to see Trump on that same screen. As an image of the president, stonefaced and standing in a salute, was shown to the crowd during Jon Batiste’s national anthem performance, the roar of approval and cheers was deafening (of course, there were those in the crowd who booed the president and cheered for Swift as well, but from my vantage point, it was clear what the overall sentiment was).
…It’s important to place these two moments in the context in which they exist. Though there are nuances to both, Trump and Swift exemplify two factions of American culture currently struggling for dominance.
…In an era when Trump is singlehandedly dismantling decades of diversity, equity, and inclusion that generations of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people have fought for, the Super Bowl felt like a microcosm of a larger problem. Not only does it feel as though Trump and his ilk want Swift out of football, it’s as if they want to return our entire country to a time when they were in control, had all the power, and could say whatever they wanted without repercussions.
And if it seems scary online, it’s even more chilling when you’re forced to confront it face to face.

They have had their six decades of anti white male hate.
Now it is soon to be over.
The fact that Glamour has a readership at all is the ‘chillingest’ thing in the multiverse. No sentient being gives a shi...er...gives an Obama about such drivel.
That article brings such a huge smile to my face.
Can’t get enough of the Left’s “chilling”.
This is just a reminder as to why you shouldn’t go to “Glamour” for your political commentary.
They should stick to reviewing lipstick. Or whatever the hell they usually do.
The premise of this article is flawed. Always be suspicious of headlines that tell you what you are thinking.
“In an era when Trump is singlehandedly dismantling decades of diversity, equity, and inclusion”
…that’s just a portion of why they’re applauding. Dumbass
Get over yourselves you hysteric infantile drama queens.
Taylor Swift decided to interject herself into politics. She choose to get in the political kitchen so she, and her brain dead bot followers, cannot now whine that the kitchen is hot.
I think they focus-grouped that word decades ago.
I think it no longer works the way they intend.
Not sure which is better, Trump destroying the Communist system or the Communist tears?
I don’t know anything about this Taylor Swift woman, but DEI is evil. It rewards people based on their race, sex, perversions. And it excludes people who are well qualified and skilled.
It’s important to have a smidgen of knowledge in economics and history before writing any political article. Which this writer has none.
1. She's the GF of a Chief so Eagles fans booed.
2. Coverage of her is reaching the over saturation point. A lot of us are sick of seeing her everywhere we go.
3. She endorsed Kamala and there are plenty of football fans that are Trumpers.
I’m so sick of these morons.
It’s all math.
50% will boo her bc she is pro chiefs. Of the rest, in the population in general, 1/3 will boo her bc of politics. Leaving aside that the crowd probably tends toward Trump politically….
That means 1/2 + (1/3 * 1/2) of the crowd will instinctively boo her. That’s 2/3 of the stadium.
The fact that an adult American thinks that a pop star represents the “good” side of our country is chilling… or maybe laughable is a better description.
Trying to make a mountain out of a mole-hill
Swift has all along been very clearly connected to the KC Chiefs. Philadelphia Eagles fans were in the majority at that game. NFL fans in general are tired of seeing her. The NFL "co-branding" exercise has become tiresome
THAT'S what fans were reacting to.
Stopped reading at “toxic masculinity”.
What “decades of diversity, equity, and inclusion”?
The DEI crap only started in the last six or so years.
