Trump and Putin could meet this month, Kremlin says, as US envoy lands in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could meet this month, although the first face-to-face encounter between a Russian and a US leader since 2021 could take longer to prepare, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.

-snip-

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the meeting in Riyadh was focused mostly on Russian-US bilateral ties but that it was also a “very, very important step” toward reaching a settlement on the Ukraine war, nearing the end of its third year.

“But this is the first step… Naturally, it’s impossible to fix everything in one day or a week. There is a long way to go,” Peskov said.

Asked if a meeting between Putin and Trump could take place this month, Peskov was quoted by Interfax as saying: “Possibly. And possibly not.”

In pushing for Ukraine elections, Trump is falling into Putin-laid trap to delegitimize Zelenskyy

https://theconversation.com/in-pushing-for-ukraine-elections-trump-is-falling-into-putin-laid-trap-to-delegitimize-zelenskyy-250003

“Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was shut out of the discussions concerning the future of his country, which took place in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 18, 2025. In fact, there were no Ukrainian representatives, nor any European Union ones – just U.S. and Russian delegations, and their Saudi hosts.

The meeting – which followed a mutually complimentary phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin just days earlier – was gleefully celebrated in Moscow. The absence of Ukraine in deciding its own future is very much in line with Putin’s policy toward its neighbor. Putin has long rejected Ukrainian statehood and the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government, or as he calls it the “Kyiv regime.”

While the U.S. delegation did reiterate that future discussions would have to involve Ukraine at some stage, the Trump administration’s actions and words have no doubt undermined Kyiv’s position and influence.

To that end, the U.S. is increasingly falling in line with Moscow on a key plank of the Kremlin’s plan to delegitimize Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government: calling for elections in Ukraine as part of any peace deal.
Questioning Zelenskyy’s legitimacy

Challenging Zelenskyy’s legitimacy is part of a deliberate ongoing propaganda campaign by Russia to discredit Ukrainian leadership, weaken support for Ukraine from its key allies and remove Zelenskyy – and potentially Ukraine – as a partner in negotiations.

Claims by the Russian president that his country is ready for peace negotiations appear, to many observers of its three-year war, highly suspect given Russia’s ongoing attacks on its neighbor and its steadfast refusal to date to agree to any temporary truce.” (Excerpt)

The link to "Trump will sign the peace, and the EU will weep for its irrelevance" is a cleverly-worded piece, unlike so many. In part and worth quoting:

"While Brussels entertained itself with institutional statements and empty promises, Ukraine was bleeding out. They had no problem turning Zelensky into the Messiah of the West when he was useful, and now that the end is in sight, the same Zelensky becomes a problem.

Did anyone in Europe really think Washington would send soldiers to Kyiv? Those Americans would die in Donbas like in Saigon?"

Posing perceptive questions like these suggest that the Harris-Walz voters on FR, the never-Trumpers on FR and some angry copy-paste types who rarely express themselves in their own words are in a quandary. They want the Ukraine-Russia was to continue.

This in an economic reality of fast-rising national debt, the revelations of massive corruption here at home and around the world, and more. Like the Principles First" crowd which boasts "Republicans" willing to included a Democrat governor and a Democrat lawyer involved in attacking Trump, they think themselves "Republican," without reflecting that like "Republican" Liz Cheney they are pushing against Republican President Trump.

All for globalist, "we rule the world" goals. Just like:

"Biden noted that he is not just running a campaign, stating, 'I run the world. It might sound like an exaggeration, but it's not; we are the country at the center of the world'."

Joe Biden mixes up the years: "I'll defeat Trump in 2020" A News, 6 July 2024

So many who campaigned against President Trump, then as now, are baying at the moon.

Poll says 63% of Ukrainians approve of Zelenskyy’s performance and 74% see him as patriot

Iryna Balachuk
Friday, 21 February 2025, 11:45
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2025/02/21/7499417/

“Two-thirds of Ukrainians completely approve or tend to approve of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s performance as president of Ukraine, while 14.4% completely disapprove of his performance.

SOURCE:
Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), citing a survey conducted between November 2024 and January 2025 as part of the Onukh IBIF (Identity and Borders in Flux: The Case of Ukraine) project, funded by the British Academy

QUOTE from the KIIS:
“When the Onukh IBIF project team (funded by the British Academy) recently asked Ukrainians: ‘Do you approve or disapprove of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s actions as president?’, they have found that support for President Zelenskyy has increased slightly since the previous poll: 63% of Ukrainians completely approve or tend to approve of his performance as president.”

DETAILS:
The sociologists noted that the indicator of approval of Zelenskyy’s performance is close to the indicator of trust in Zelenskyy. Still, they are not entirely identical because “you can approve of a person’s performance without trusting them”.

“In addition, these indicators (both approval and trust) are different from the electoral rating, when a person has to choose from a list of candidates to vote for. In the case of voting, people use different evaluation criteria and this reflects a different attitude. There are now many manipulations with the data and presentation of approval/trust levels as electoral ratings, which is incorrect,” KIIS stressed.

The Onukh IBIF project team also surveyed Ukrainians about President Zelenskyy’s qualities.

ACCORDING TO THE RESULTS, 74% see him as a patriot of Ukraine, 73% believe he is intelligent and knowledgeable, 60% consider him honest and trustworthy, and 65% view him as a strong leader.

IN ADDITION, the Onukh IBIF study indicates that Zelenskyy remains the frontrunner in polls for future elections, with around 26%-32% of respondents saying they would vote for him in the first round. Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s fifth president and a member of the European Solidarity party, would receive 5-6% support.

Sociologists suggest that Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, former Commander-in-Chief and current Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, could be a strong contender in a potential second round, though he has not publicly voiced any political ambitions.

The research was conducted from 22 November 2024 to 7 January 2025. A total of 1,600 respondents aged 18 and over were interviewed by telephone. The sample did not include residents of the temporarily occupied territories or those who moved abroad after 24 February 2022.

Mea culpa. I had intended to cite the last from the article you posted. Ergo:

The fantasies of global leadership are over. The illusion of being a strategic actor is over. Europe is, once again, a spectator of its own destiny, a mere bystander in the great global chess game. And when history is written again, Brussels will only appear in a footnote.
By Jorge Mestre, and first published in Spanish. The sentiment above certainly seems apt an an observation of today's Democrat Party and those amusing Democrat-adjacent RINOs who seem so upset these days.

Incorrect:
Comment #20 is not a leftist source:

“ON THURSDAY, REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN BRIAN FITZPATRICK POSTED A STATEMENT ON TWITTER in which he gave voice to other lawmakers in his party who are not happy about what Trump is doing with Ukraine. For its interest, I transcribe the full text of his statement here:

‘President Volodymyr Zelenskyy need not, and must not, have any deal forced upon him by any outside nation that does not guarantee the security and the sovereignty of the Ukrainian people, the people who elected him with over 73% of the popular vote, in an election that was recognized as free and fair by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), where I served as a Commissioner and Congressional Appointee. Russia has never held such elections.

President Zelenskyy, and all negotiators, need to know this: There is an outcome-determinative number of Members of the United States Congress, from both parties and in both Chambers, who are ready, willing, and able to do whatever it takes to prevent Communist Dictator Vladimir Putin from being rewarded for his illegal invasion, raping, kidnapping, torturing and murdering of the Ukrainian people, including so many women and children. We will use every lever and every vote at our disposal, regardless of the personal or political consequences. This matter is that time-sensitive and it is that existential. It is legacy-defining.

We all want an immediate end to this brutal Russian invasion and killing. For a peace agreement to be fair and lasting, it must be done in a way that holds the Russian invaders accountable, protects the dignity of the Ukrainian victims, and provides for fair and equitable cost-sharing amongst all European nations. To do otherwise would be to encourage future invasions and to perpetuate future heartache and bloodshed.

This is about Peace Through Strength. This is about Patriotic Common Sense. And Patriotic Common Sense is what America must always stand for.’ (Excerpt)

Kremlin says there’s still no concrete detail on possible Trump-Putin meeting
Reuters

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-says-theres-still-no-concrete-detail-possible-trump-putin-meeting-2025-02-21/

MOSCOW, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Friday that there was a mutual understanding about the need for a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that the details of such an encounter had yet to be worked out.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides agreed at talks in Riyadh this week - their first on how to end the Ukraine war before more formal negotiations - that the two leaders should meet, but “there are no specifics yet.” He noted that both men had said they were keen to talk in person.

There is a desire of the two presidents, which they expressed, and there is also an instruction to prepare this meeting well so that it will be as productive as possible. It is during the preparation that all the nuances will be discussed,” Peskov said.

Trump said after the Saudi meeting on Tuesday that he would probably meet Putin before the end of the month.
Putin said on Wednesday that the meeting needed to be carefully prepared in order to achieve results.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a Putin-Trump meeting would largely depend on whether progress could be made on ending the war, and Trump wanted to know if Putin was serious about that.

Peskov restated that Putin was open to negotiating a settlement to the conflict. (Excerpt)
