So, after cutting and pasting the exact same text in both headline and excerpt, I take it this has something to do with solving a Rubik’s cube in less than 3.08 seconds, correct?

Sure. Easy. No problem...

Right.

There’s no way I could even follow the explanation on YouTube.

I can get 1 piece in the right place in 3 seconds.

Did they ever recover that unfortunate teenager’s Rubik’s cube from the wreck of the Titanic?

That was Parker Brothers' Instant Insanity. Rubik's Cubes didn't appear until 1974.

Yea, but how long does it take him to find the leading edge of a roll of clear packing tape?

Back in the 80s there was a book with the sequences needed to rectify a distorted rubics cube. I studied and memorized, and practiced practiced practiced. At best, I might have, rather quickly, righted the cube in approx. 5 minutes. It’s extremely hard to believe it can be done in 3+ seconds. Some sort of illusion must be employed.

“Back in the 80s”

That’s the operative phrase for this story.

Nowadays people aren’t paying much attention to the cube.

As soon as I pick it up, one piece is in the right place.

Same here. Maybe I could have done it in 3 minutes but not 3 seconds.

As I recall, every cube can be solved in 20 or fewer moves. However it takes longer than 3 seconds to analyze the cube and see which moves have to be done.

Nowadays people aren’t paying much attention to the cube.

That's a shame. It's a fun challenge for people who actually do the work to solve it, instead of looking up solutions online.

Soon after the cube was released for sale, I was given my first cube by my brother. His attitude was, "You're so smart, solve THIS!" I did not even know if the thing was solvable. So of course I had to solve it. Some challenges cannot be ignored.

In the same spirit as my brother, I gave a cube to my genius friend. For a while he did nothing but try to solve the cube, failing and failing, refusing to converse with anyone. Eventually he solved it. I asked him for details, and learned that his technique was completely different from mine. We apparently had no moves in common.

At the time he was in law school. He ended up displaying his new skill to his class, and received a standing ovation.

A few years after my first success with the cube I tried it again. I remembered a few moves, but most were forgotten, along with the location of the notebook where I recorded my move sequences with explanations.

Oh well.

while I can consistently do it in under a minute, I am not sure how 3 seconds is possible

but then they said that about breaking the speed of sound, cold fusion, ftl travel, and finding an honest Democrat

I can solve it in two minutes, but even I didn’t understand the explanation in the video.

It's not an illusion. I also had one of those books in the 80s. The way that I solved it required a large number of moves, but I only had to remember a small number of sequences.

For these people, it's the opposite They memorize a huge number of sequences, and they also plan out their moves in advance during the 15 second inspection process. So they only have to make a much smaller number of moves.

Also, they use speed cubes that have magnets so they can be turned very quickly without locking up.

Most of the real work is done during the 15 second inspection before they even make their first turn.

They get 15 seconds to look at it before they start to make moves. That 15 seconds doesn’t count for the official record.

Yep. Every cube can be solve in 20 moves or fewer.

In addition, there is at least one combination that cannot be solved in fewer than 20 moves. It's where all 12 edge pieces start out flipped, but everything else is properly placed and oriented.
