A US citizen has been released by Russia just weeks after being detained, ahead of Tuesday's meeting between US and Russian officials, aimed at improving relations.
In a press briefing today, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov says the release can be seen in the context of the upcoming talks.
"As on Tuesday the restoration of relations will be discussed, these events can be seen in that context," Peskov tells reporters.
Kalob Byers was taken into custody on 7 February after arriving at Moscow Vnukovo International Airport, and a sniffer dog found two jars of the cannabis products.
Byers claimed they were prescribed by an American doctor.

Such prisoners will see little sympathy from Freepers.
What they should do is maybe make them serve some kind of sentence on American soil rather than an actual full release which should be saved - in my opinion - for actual unjust or harsh sentences.
That guy is probably too stupid for us to take back.
I’m a libertarian but you must respect another countries laws

I think they should serve a few weeks in a US prison or something like that — based on this stupidity.
The full release should be saved for actual miscarriages of justice or someone caught up in something bad with no other remedy.
Pot addiction is a real thing. If you declare cigarettes illegal in Russia, you’ll see the same thing.
Do you remember “ping pong” diplomacy? This Detente, this global realpolitik is moving at breakneck speed. From the moment the Kellogg distraction began, real negations started on the QT. It’s incredible, from the first phone call to major summit in 20 days!
Time and time again it is mj. What part of don’t bring it in to Russia do these morons not understand? Doesn’t matter if it is prescribed or not. Anyone can forge a prescription to show another country. You’re right, I don’t care about them. Let them stay in Russian jails. Stop using up our favors on them.
OK, you found a doctor to prescribe “medical” marijuana, and you buy some, and then you decide to go to Russia. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to check how that is viewed in Russia?
