A recent study conducted by Microsoft in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University has raised concerns about the potential cognitive impacts of overreliance on AI tools such as Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT. The research suggests that while these generative AI assistants can enhance productivity by handling routine tasks, excessive dependence on them may lead to a decline in users' critical thinking abilities.
The study highlights a key irony of automation: by mechanizing routine tasks and leaving exception-handling to the human user, individuals are deprived of regular opportunities to practice judgment and strengthen cognitive skills. This lack of engagement can result in mental atrophy, leaving users unprepared when exceptions arise that require deeper analytical thinking.
Researchers observed that employees who frequently relied on AI for task completion exhibited diminished critical thinking skills compared to their less-dependent counterparts. These findings align with anecdotal reports from users expressing concerns about a decline in their cognitive engagement due to habitual AI use. One user noted, "I can really see that ChatGPT will make us more dumb as we will increasingly use AI without thinking and engaging our brain."
This research adds to a growing body of literature examining the unintended consequences of integrating AI into daily workflows. While AI tools offer significant benefits in terms of efficiency and convenience, experts caution against overdependence. They recommend that users remain mindful of maintaining their cognitive faculties by actively engaging in tasks that require critical thinking and problem-solving, rather than defaulting to AI solutions for all challenges.
As AI continues to evolve and become more embedded in various aspects of work and life, striking a balance between leveraging technological advancements and preserving human cognitive skills will be essential. Users are encouraged to use AI as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, their own critical thinking processes.
Great idea. Thx much.
“Speaking of musical instruments, I have been thinking about getting a digital piano. I played as a kid and miss it.
And I have plenty of time to practice.”
Tell you what... You should! It will help preserve what you have left going forward... I know it is helping me. :)
I play and find huge advantages in it. Been playing all my life and I am pretty accomplished. What I find mentally exercising is improvising. It incites the creative brain cells one normally does not use but the whole benefits from it. It can also be very spiritual and can increase mental awareness and reduce stress.
Someone once told me that they were having trouble staying awake at work after a heavy lunch and she was at her wits end how to fix it. So I suggested do some light exercise after lunch to raise her metabolism. She thanked me for changing her life because it worked so well. Point is like you say, exercise it and it will serve you better overall.
Have you considered just getting a MIDI Keyboard to start with? Just plug it in your computer and download some good software and go. Maybe just add or connect to a sound system for fuller sound? There is some incredible software out there now! The sampling tech is now so rich you can truly make it sound like a Grand Piano or a huge Tabernacle Organ. And you can add layers of backup rhythms, guitars, strings, horns, drum tracks, Etc. All from the keyboard and cheap!
I like THAT kind of tech... lol :)
“or you could let the media do your thinking for you.”
Since they incorporate political propaganda in AI like climate change what is the difference?
That is a very good question.
The difference is our current leadership.
The difference is if we do our personal mission of teaching just one arrow to shoot into the future. We are in this mess because we didn’t do our job.
What are people possibly doing that they’re even able to use ChatGPT so much for?
The only time I even see this stuff is in Braves search, where it summarizes the first five or ten results, often with major errors in technical stuff...
Currently they are using it to research and write articles, term papers, and such. It does it all for them and they don’t even have to research, think, or create with their own minds anymore. AI is a crutch for the lazy and cheaters.
And mainly it can be used to control huge amounts of data and manage network systems. Someday soon it will be our master by remote. They are going to use it to turn us all into mindless zombies and control us remotely through chips in our brains.
It is not science fiction anymore, it is a reality. Musk is working on that right now. We will physically be connected by bluetooth, the internet, and by satellite. It will control every aspect of our lives 24-7. All managed and organized by AI. It will literally be the “Matrix” like the movie.
AI is one of the most dangerous concepts ever invented.
You are hip then... Yep, they are going to connect us to the IoT like a Refrigerator. And why are folks embracing it? Because it is a “shiny new toy” being sold to them as the best thing since sliced bread.
Sliced bread cannot enslave you...
I had a boyfriend and we’d go out GeoCaching. He struggled quite a bit with the directional cues. Now with full GPS it isn’t much fun.
Lol, I hated that concept... Only because I owned 160 acres in the desert southwest and they would set up caches on my private property without permission. Same with pokemon go.
It was a huge liability insurance issue for me...
