Treasury watchdog begins audit of Musk DOGE team's access to federal government's payment system
Star Tribune ^ | 2/14/25

Posted on 02/14/2025 8:53:53 AM PST by EBH

The Treasury Department's Office of Inspector General on Friday said it was launching an audit of the security controls for the federal government's payment system, after Democratic senators raised red flags about the access provided to Trump aide Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency team.

The audit will also review the past two years of the system’s transactions as it relates to Musk’s assertion of ‘’alleged fraudulent payments,‘’ according to a letter from Loren J. Sciurba, Treasury’s deputy inspector general, that was obtained by The Associated Press.

The audit marks part of the broader effort led by Democratic lawmakers and federal employee unions to provide transparency and accountability about DOGE’s activities under President Donald Trump’s Republican administration. The Musk team has pushed for access to the government’s computer systems and sought to remove tens of thousands of federal workers.

‘‘We expect to begin our fieldwork immediately,‘’ Sciburba wrote. ‘’Given the breadth of this effort, the audit will likely not be completed until August; however, we recognize the danger that improper access or inadequate controls can pose to the integrity of sensitive payment systems. As such, if critical issues come to light before that time, we will issue interim updates and reports.‘’

They won’t have a report until...August?

DOGE will be done long before then at the rate they are going.

“the broader effort led by Democratic lawmakers and federal employee unions to provide transparency and accountability about DOGE’s activities”

That’s too rich. The Dems aren’t concerned about the lack of transparency and accountability of Treasury transactions and the likely theft of hundreds of billions of dollars.

No, they are obviously concerned that DOGE will uncover and expose more fetid swamp and Democrat corruption, but they have to couch it in “we want transparency and accountability of DOGE activities.”

I hope Trump, Musk and DOGE absolutely DESTROY these corrupt Dems.

Deflect from the massive evidence of fraud and payoffs. That’s the ticket: audit the audit. That’ll keep the people confused. Anything to keep the corruption from being exposed.

My question is the IG have the authorization to do this? Or are they acting just on the Democrats request? Because I am pretty sure this might be an issue.

ROLE AND AUTHORITIES OF INSPECTORS GENERAL
IGs have the requirement to make reports to both the agency head and to Congress. IGs are required to keep both fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to agency programs and operations.

IGs typically brief their agency heads on important audits, investigations, evaluations, and other reviews they conduct. In addition, IGs often testify before congressional Committees, and they regularly receive requests from, provide briefings to, and participate in meetings with congressional members and their staffs.

To fulfill their mission, IGs are granted broad authorities. Among other powers, IGs are authorized to:

• Obtain timely access to records and documents available to their agencies in relation to
any program or operation over which the IG has responsibility;
• Request information or assistance from any federal, state, or local agency;
• Subpoena records and documents from any no

Sounds like a violation of separation of powers. The legislative body does not have the authority to issue directives to the executive branch.
It can request but anyone on the executive side should have to clear any response with the chief.

I agree. This IG doesn’t have authority over DOGE.

And let me add to that how it's amazing that Democrats in the minority squawk about something and things like this immediately happen.

Who oversees the IGs?
The IGs serve under the general supervision of the agency head. Yet, by statute, IGs have a dual and independent reporting relationship to the agency head and to the Congress.
Allegations of misconduct against an IG should be referred to the Integrity Committee of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE).

I know an IRS collections agent. He said he could be fired for accessing taxpayer information without being assigned to the case.

Sounded like there were tight controls over what could be accessed.
