The moment the ship I was on (USS Mars AFS-1) collided with the USS Cook (FF 1083) our very senior captain said, “GD, that’s it.” He was talking about his career. He was so senior he was allowed to take the ship back to our homeport, but then he was gone. The captain of the Cook, a commander, went away immediately from what we were told, never to be seen again.
