Beavers have saved the Czech government and its citizens $1.2 million by flooding what used to be an army training site, where a dam was planned, by building one of their own. Local officials had intended to build a dam to protect the Klabava River and its ecosystem, which includes the endangered crayfish, from acid water spilling over from surrounding ponds.
This proposed project would also turn the protected area south of Prague into a wetland. It was first proposed in 2018 but the build permit was delayed due to negotiations over the land with the military, which used the site as training grounds.
Before the government could start its project in the area, beavers had already built their dam at the site. Bohumil Fiser from the Czech Nature Conservation told AFP that the rodents “built a wetland with pools and canals.” The area is twice as large as the government had previously planned.
Beavers have built at least 4 Dams, helping the Czech government and conservationists After completing their work at the original site, the beavers shifted their focus to other areas, which coincidentally were the same ones conservationists had previously selected for dam construction to manage overspill and flood the region.
They reported that the beaver family has completed at least 4 dams in the gulley, and are currently working on more. In his interview with AFP, Fiser said, “We were only discussing (building the dams in the gulleys) with the water company and the forest company which owns the land”.

Mr. Fiser also said, “It’s full service, beavers are absolutely fantastic and when they are in an area where they can’t cause damage, they do a brilliant job.”
The Czech government has had trouble dealing with the furry rodents, as farmers and other individuals who live in the Czech Republic’s rural areas have complained about the destruction they have caused by cutting down trees. The government implemented measures in 2016, declaring any area put in danger by beavers to be protected.
Beavers in the Czech Ecosystem These animals are often regarded as “ecosystem engineers” and significantly impact the Czech Republic’s environment through their dam building. In addition to the specific case where beavers saved the government $1.2 million, they have successfully created wetlands in the country that serve as habitats for various animals. The wetlands also act as water filters by trapping sediments and pollutants.
According to a study, the return of these mammals to areas in the Czech Republic like the Krkonoše Mountains also points to ecological restoration in the country.
Wow that took way to Dam long
Another beaver thread I see. :)
I like beavers....
I dunno...dam creatures used to cause me a lot of troublle in my late teens and 20s.
