Elon Musk launches $100 billion hostile takeover of major tech rival -- Open AI

Elon Musk is leading a group of investors offering to buy OpenAI for nearly $100 billion.

The takeover bid was submitted to OpenAI's board of directors on Monday, Musk's attorney Marc Toberoff told the Wall Street Journal.

Open AI is currently a non-profit run by Musk's nemesis Sam Altman.

The tech entrepreneurs are currently locked in a legal battle about the future of the company, considered a leader in artificial intelligence research.

The maker's of ChatGPT have not publicly responded to the unsolicited bid from Musk and his associates.

Musk's audacious bid has thrown a spanner in Altman's plans to turn OpenAI in to a for-profit company.

'It's time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was,' Musk said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal.

'We will make sure that happens,' he added.

Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, but the Tesla CEO left in 2019.

Altman, who become CEO, launched the organisation's for-profit branch allowing it to raise money from large investors such as Microsoft.

Altman has laid out plans to turn the for-profit branch in to a traditional company and keep the non-profit side going but giving it equity in the company side.

In a series of lawsuits Musk has accused OpenAI of betraying its nonprofit mission and instead colluding with Microsoft to dominate the development of AI.

As Altman moves forward with his plans, putting a price on the non-profit OpenAI has been a contentious issue.

Musk's bid now sets a high bar and if accepted it could mean he ends up with a controlling stake in the new OpenAI, the Journal reported.

Musk is backing the bid with his own company xAI, which could end up merging with OpenAI following a possible deal.

Busy man. IIRC, Musk was one of the initial investors in OpenAI, based on the understanding that it was meant to be a not-for-profit venture.

If I was a betting man I'd say Musk is trying to keep it out of the direct hands and influences of the cabal he and Trump are fighting right now.

Sam Altman (gay) is worth more than one billion from Open AI. He gives creepy vibes.

“I saw their Super Bowl ad yesterday.”

I hear there were zero automobile and pickup truck commercials in this Super Bowl. Opposite of how it used to be.

I heard on the top of the hour news that Altman already said, “absolutely not”.

What now?

Personal life
Altman has been a vegetarian since childhood.[97]

Altman is openly gay.[98][99][100] He disclosed his sexuality at the age of 17[98] in high school,[99][100] where he spoke out after some students objected to a National Coming Out Day speaker.[98][101] He dated Loopt co-founder Nick Sivo for nine years. They broke up shortly after the company was acquired in 2012.[99]

Altman married engineer Oliver Mulherin in January 2024,[102] at their estate in Hawaii;[103] the pair also live in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood and often spend weekends in Napa, California.[100][104] They committed to giving away most of their wealth by signing the Giving Pledge in May 2024.[105]

Altman is an apocalypse preparer.[9][106] He said in 2016: “I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israel Defense Forces, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to.”[9]

In January 2025, Altman’s sister Ann Altman filed a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by Altman in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri in St. Louis. The lawsuit alleges that the abuse started when Ann Altman was aged 3 and Sam Altman was 12.[107] Sam Altman, along with his mother Connie and younger brothers Max and Jack, issued a joint statement on X denying the allegations, describing them as “utterly untrue”.[108][109][110]

Could be a win-win. Personally I’ve found X’s Grok to be a bit more accurate and useful.

That’s just not fair! It would be like Henry Ford offering to buy Messerschmitt AG (great fighter planes) and Krupp (Panzers) in the middle of the war.

Yes, but none of the ads topped the little girl potato farmer for LAYS chips. Brought tears to my (and I bet millions of) eyes. Especially after that fabulous Olympics-esque half-time fever dream.
