Russia plays hardball on Ukraine peace discussions after Trump talks of Putin contact

Russia's point man for relations with the United States said on Monday that all of President Vladimir Putin's conditions must be met in full before the war in Ukraine can end, suggesting Moscow is playing hardball with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Moscow swiftly underscored that its maximalist demands - as set out by Putin in June last year - remained the opening bid at the outset of the negotiations.

The "political solution as we envisage it cannot be achieved otherwise than through the full implementation of what was pronounced by President Putin when he spoke to the Russian Foreign Ministry in June," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told a Moscow news briefing in English.

"This is where we are and the sooner U.S., Britain and others understand it, the better it would be and the closer this desired political solution will be for everyone," said Ryabkov.

In Putin's June 14 speech to the foreign ministry, he set out his terms: Ukraine must drop its NATO ambitions and withdraw its troops from the entirety of the territory of four Ukrainian regions claimed and mostly controlled by Russia.

Interesting comment from the Yahoo!News re-publishing of a Reuters article --

45 minutes ago Putin has to give up something as does Ukraine for there to be peace. Maybe they haven't suffered enough. Let the war continue until both sides want peace more than they want war.
Seems there are more than two opinions in this world.

Putin and Trump are still positioning for the start of negotiations. Will work out well.

There’s a well known style of negotiation literally called “Russian negotiation style.”. Think New York attitude turned up to eleven. Trump will eat their lunch.

Russia holds all the cards.

Why would they fold?

Why would they fold?

Because they are in an endless war that they can't get out of and which is draining their economy?

I really don't think that Russia anticipated this being the situation three years ago. I suspect that there are many on their side that are hoping for an end to the war that saves face for Russia.

There is a deal to be made.

Traditionally such negotiations begin with each side offering a wrapped gift to the other side as a show of friendship.

I think Putin would be very pleased with Z’s head in a box.

“ Moscow swiftly underscored that its maximalist demands ”

Putin read Trump’s book. Things will turn out well. Journalists would do well to read the book also.

---- "...Putin would be very pleased with Z's head in a box."

From Salome to Robespierre to the idiotic Kathy Griffin, the imagery has much dark precedence.

“Trump will eat their lunch.”

Trump has been in New York real estate for decades. He knows how to deal with crooks and gangsters.

Once Zelensky is defunded, negotiations will proceed smoothy.

ya patience

Nothing will happen until Gabbard is in place. Trump is being briefed by Biden holdovers. They embed Biden narratives in their briefings.

Nothing will happen until Gabbard is in place and fires a bunch of people. Few weeks.

If Trump stops funding then the war won't be "endless".

Trump and his voters want the war defunded. Putin knows that. Trump would have to bluff and threaten further funding, else Putin will take from Ukraine what he wants.
