Trump wants a deal for Ukraine’s natural resources as ‘payback’ in exchange for aid stopping Russia attack: envoy

The US won’t repeat the mistakes of the Iraq War by failing to secure valuable resources from Ukraine in exchange for help ending Russia’s nearly three-year-old invasion, President Trump’s special envoy to the conflict exclusively told The Post.

“When you look at the mineral deposits in that country, we’re not talking millions of dollars. We’re talking — virtually every region, we’re talking about billions, and then some regions are [worth] trillions,” retired Gen. Keith Kellogg said this week.

“You can come up with a deal, and that’s what [Trump] has the Treasury looking at: ‘OK, how do you make a deal where aid is predicated off of the payback [of] precious metals?'”

-snip-

“When we walked out of the Iraq War, we don’t have a single oil contract in Iraq proper — they’re all in Kurdistan,” Kellogg explained. “Nothing. All the sacrifice went to no one. So I think the president is taking an economical look: ‘If you want to do this, there’s got to be something good for the American people,’ and that’s how he’s looking at it.”

On Friday, Trump told reporters he intended to meet with Zelensky next week and indicated he was interesting in discussing Ukraine’s resources and obtaining “an equal amount of something” in exchange for American backing.

“We would like them to equalize,” said the president, who added that he wants to see the “ridiculous” European war brought to an end “just on a human basis” and that many Ukrainian cities have been devastated “worse than Gaza.”

Y’all are an idiot.
Do you not know Ukraine used to rule Russia?
A Ukrainian king installed his family
to control Russia, and eventually they revolted?
This is a civil war, brother against brother.
Trump is smart enough to stay out of it.
Every cop will tell you the scariest thing is
to be in the middle of a family fight!
one second they maybe trying to kill each other
and the next second both will turn on you!

Do you not know Ukraine used to rule Russia?

What are you babbling about? Do you even know?

Modern-day Ukraine was pieced together by Stalin. It included parts of what has been Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania.

It's not all surprising the country would be divided after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The ethnically and culturally Russian part of the country had every right to its independence and/or to join the Russian Federation after the illegal coup we fomented in 2014.

WE setoff the civil war.

The Ukraine economy will not have the wherewithal “immediately” and likely for years

Then, than Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania can have what's left of it.

It's absurd to suggest we put another penny into Ukraine.

seems fair, the US gets mineral rights to rare earth minerals, and in exchange kicks Russia the hell out of Ukrainian territory.

Modern-day Ukraine was pieced together by Stalin. It included parts of what has been Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania.

You really should read some history. The Ukrainians have had a separate identity and language from the Russians for centuries. The modern state of Ukraine was not formed by Stalin but was created by the Ukrainians themselves when they declared independence from Russia in 1917, long before Stalin came to power. Its independence was recognized by Russian the following year. Even after it was conquered by the Bolsheviks it was not reabsorbed into Russia but became a constitutive state of the new Soviet Union on equal terms, in theory, with Russia. Putin has labelled this as "Lenin's mistake."

The ethnically and culturally Russian part of the country had every right to its independence and/or to join the Russian Federation after the illegal coup we fomented in 2014.

We have covered this ground before. The only ethnic Russia oblast in Ukraine is Crimea. Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, have ethnic Ukrainian majorities. Nor did they declare independence. The former were seized by Russia militarily with the use surrogate militias, while the latter were seized by the Russian army directly.

Inclined to believe there are no rare earth metals there, and frankly, Gazprom will know more about it than anyone since they explored the whole place.

Putin’s response to it all. You can have any minerals you find. Free.

Well, duh!

That doesn't mean the annexed territory wasn't PART OF RUSSIA before it was reassigned to be part of Ukraine by the Soviets.

That explains why that part of what used to be Ukraine was ethnically and culturally Russian.

And, Ukrainian nationalists had no right to try to force an illegally-formed government on the people there, let alone persecute and try to kill those there.

Most of the rare earths are in the annexed part of what was Ukraine. And, the peace plan floated that you posted says any deal will require you Ukraine to concede that territory to Russia.

That being said, we should require repayment from the part of Ukraine that is left.

No, it's been annexed with consent of the people there and will remain part of the Russian Federation.

Nothing will change that.

Or do suggest Americans go and die trying to take it back?
