£22bn ($27bn) for 'unproven' Green Tech could raise bills, MPs warn

The government is committing billions of pounds to an "unproven" green technology for reducing planet-warming gases without considering the impact on consumers' bills, MPs have warned.

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) facilities prevent carbon dioxide, produced by industry, being released into the atmosphere by capturing and storing it underground.

In October, the government pledged nearly £22bn [$27bn] for CCUS facilities and three quarters of the money will be raised from consumer bills.

But on Friday, the House of Commons' Public Accounts Committee raised serious concerns that the government had not properly assessed the financial impact on households and businesses.

"It is an unproven technology, certainly in this country. And we are concerned this policy is going to have a very significant effect on consumers' and industry's electricity bills," said Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, chair of the Public Accounts Committee, a cross-party group of MPs which scrutinises public spending.

Speaking to the BBC Today programme on Friday, Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy, acknowledged the technology was novel but said it was vital for tackling climate change.

”CCS is an innovative technology in terms of being used at scale, but all the expert advice - UK Climate Change Committee and others - say if we don't do this we are never going to cut global emissions,” he said.

He added he was “100% committed” to the government's climate goals.

The UK has a target to reach "net zero" - meaning no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, by 2050. As the country switches to renewable energy and away from fossil fuels for heating homes and running cars, greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide, also known as CO2, will fall.

This is carbon capture , not proven by any means yet we will burdened with it via even higher bills.

I've warned about this before but the UK is going dark or bankrupt and possibly both with Net Zero. Wait and see.

What is going on?!!

The country of Thatcher?!? I think I spelled it right :)

YES, we are not the country of The Great One anymore, where 90 plus percent of the EV went to Ronald Reagan.

But we will won a majority and that doesn’t include the cheating numbers.

I dont know much about the UK and I should..but I’ve last track through the decades..

Even that guy during the Iraq war seemed pretty sane.

And I keep reading that the “masses” are fed up and furiuos and make up more than 50 percent of the vote.

What happened?!?

No one needs to reply to this...I’d love to know why but it’s a tedious post to respond to :)

Spitfire suicide mission airmen...what was their life span..weeks?

“If you’re going through hell, keep going” and “Never, never, never give up”. Great orator and man of the time.

We went from those folks to this current state??

From that...to this.

If the UK goes bankrupt, we can take them over. That’s how they got Scotland. Scotland went broke trying to build the Panama Canal in the wrong spot.

The UK has a Deep State, too.

And it just cancelled a number of local elections in May.

I will tell you what happened, the Tories were utterly utterly useless and Tory supporters either stayed home or voted Reform, allowing Labour to win with 33% of the vote and fewer voters than they had when they lost in 2019.
Some people who voted Labour still stuck in the Tory vs Labour dichotomy of voting for one of these parties to get the other now.

It does seem that some Labour voters have learned and Reform are currently on track to win the most seats, and possibly even a majority in 2029.

One can believe whatever they want that has reduced this once great nation to an ash heap. Folks have gone off the rails for example on USAID - yet in hindsight it never costs a thing as it is just piled on the national debt like everything else. This where and why much hatred is so strong against the GOP/GOPe/uniparty/dems/RINOs/deepstate as they collectively work together to raise the debt ceiling to easily $40 trillion by the end of the decade.

Congress raises the debt ceiling, it is they who are the biggest enemy of a free people.

Forgot to add that had Kamala won she would have likely added another 1/2 $trillion to the federal debt by giving this redistributionist money to the UK for their social programs and windmills and we’d be stuck paying the interest as long as we are alive.

“Congress raises the debt ceiling, it is they who are the biggest enemy of a free people.”

If the debt ceiling isn’t raised... the default/collapse would be blamed on Trump/GOP. Better to give him time and a chance to drag us back from the brink.

I get the current dilemma, look at the dates on the chart above as it has been ballooning for over a generation. One cannot blame the dems as it uniparty corruption to the core and the GOPe is complicit in every dollar of it.

Our debt is pretty much the same as the UK as it is redistribution of wealth that got us here.

I disagree. One can indeed blame the Dems for overspending on asinine, woke and wasteful expenditures of hardworking Americans’ dollars for every stupid scheme they could think of... as is now being exposed and proven by the USAID ongoing scandal. That wasn’t the GOPe doing that. And the GOPe is merely the Democrats in GOP “clothing” (RINOs). They are not on the GOP side, quite the opposite... as proven by their crucial votes with the Democrats on every important piece of legislation.

“Our debt is pretty much the same as the UK as it is redistribution of wealth that got us here.”

The difference is... the UK doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell of recovering on their own from the disaster they have created for themselves. We do. Under Trump’s management, that is. But as we are witnessing, the protests and wailing coming from the left is deafening because their gravy train of corruption is being dismantled, piece by piece, day by day. Go Trump.
