Pastor pushed out after parishioners complain about focus on racial justice

The Sunday after Donald Trump won a second term, Pastor Ben Boswell took to the pulpit at Myers Park Baptist, a liberal [FAR left] church in Charlotte, and delivered the sort of blunt, provocative sermon for which he is well known.

Several weeks later, the board met on Zoom. They voted 17-3 to ask Boswell to step down. NPR obtained the audio.

...

Marcy McClanahan, then head of the board, said the first reason Boswell needed to go was plunging attendance. Myers Park had gone from average weekly attendance of about 350 when Boswell arrived in 2016 to about 150 last year.

...

Myers Park Baptist Church has a rich civil rights history and sits in one of Charlotte's wealthiest neighborhoods.

"We have got to put more butts in the seats, butts in the seats," he said.

In a statement later, Dulin said he personally loved what he called Boswell's "powerful prophetic preaching."

The problem, he said at the meeting, is that too many other parishioners didn't.

...

During his nine years at Myers Park, Boswell says he pushed the church to confront what he called its whiteness.

Several years ago at an anti-racism seminar, he said Myers Park needed to change its wedding policy, which had been described as "WASPy," and decolonize its interior space as part of what he called a "whiteness audit."

“NOBODY complained about not hearing the Gospel.”

I drive by a liberal “church” every morning on the way to work that has a message board that looks like DNC talking points rather than proclaiming the Gospel. The tamest message is that the church is inclusive. Recently, it took a page out of Bishop Budde’s book with a message about the “dignity of ALL migrants.” But unfortunately, I doubt these parishioners will drive their pastor out.

Anytime you see the word “justice” at a church, it means “politics” and adherence to Democrat narratives.

A whiteness audit .
Nothing like good old fashioned Christian color blind brothers and sisters getting together. Oh wait a minute…..

Well the interesting thing is this liberal church, proud of their liberal heritage more than anything else, kicked out the pastor.

But was the seats in the pew the real reason, or they got tired of blame whitey?

So, does the pastor want to bus wedding guest in from the ghetto?

Maybe he wants his church to look more Catholic inside?

Baptist preaching when I was a kid was known for preaching against the 7 deadly sins. Now I guess there is a new deadly sin called Whiteness.

Southern Baptist racism has a new face.

> decolonize its interior space <

Well, that’s an interesting turn of the phrase. Perhaps it means get rid of everything invented or installed by a white person.

I would remind the pastor that the fundamentals of electricity were worked out by white people. Ben Franklin, Nikola Tesla, James Clerk Maxwell, etc.

So I hope the pastor has no electrical devices in his house.

Practice what you preach, and all that.

He did preach the gospel - that was not the issue. The problem is that he twisted Jesus’ words to focus exclusively on racism and social justice. “The gospels inspire us to become SJ warriors” was his message.

NOBODY complained about not hearing the Gospel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are seeing a very DEFINITE " sorting out" now of " churches" as GOD HIMSELF is doing exactly what HE said in His WORD....The GOSPEL of Jesus Christ is actually NOT preached at all in may so called churches!
Even so come QUICKLY Lord Jesus!
Usually, perhaps. The word “justice” is not with a sound theological basis.
