I guess you’d go about it in a similar way that a cryptanalyst works to break a code - you look for order, pattern, etc.; and that is probably enhanced by the context of archaeological finds relating to the particular culture.

It seems they would use computers and algorithms for a lot of this now.

Had no problem deciphering this. It’s almost February, this is the guys Valentines card.

If you look at the far upper left symbol, that’s him greeting the two wives. The two oval symnbols are self explanitory, and the bull below is taking them dancing first. Gotta read the entire thing.
