Trump rips Biden, Democrats for DC plane crash, blames unqualified FAA employees and putting ‘policy first’
NY Post ^ | 01/30/2025 | Steven Nelson

The president cited articles that said the FAA was prioritizing hiring people with “severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website.”

“The FAA — another story — determined that the workforce was too white. They actually came out with a directive to white and we want the people that are competent,” he said.

“You have to be talented, naturally talented — geniuses — you can’t have regular people doing that, won’t be able to do it, but I will restore faith in American air travel.”

During the Q-and-A period, Trump acknowledged, “We don’t know, necessarily, that it was even the controller’s fault” and also blamed the Black Hawk helicopter’s crew for not spotting the plane.

“The FAA website states they include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism — all qualified for the position of a controller.”

When I first heard of this last night my heart jumped. My son is in the military and in DC. Was he coming home from a trip to Fort Knox. My grandson is in the Airforce, was he in that helicopter? Now I hear it happened over Joint base Anacostia where my son is actually stationed. You’d think I’d be used to this but I’m not.

Incorrect - it's the most maneuverable, not necessarily the fastest.

An airliner on final is low and slow, and committed to the path to the runway. Pilot and copilot are watching altitude, instruments, and the path to landing.

Helicopter is far more maneuverable, not on final, thus responsible.

Too early to say for sure, but with that said - probably the heli pilot responded that he had the plane in sight, but had the wrong plane (one was taking off about the same time). Some fault perhaps on ATC not making doubly sure, since landing aircraft had just switched runways.

Also - far too much traffic in and out of DCA given the congestion and tight quarters as well as the proximity of the military base and all the restricted airspace. Reduce the number of flights and carefully review all flight paths.

Natural Concern.

And the last 4 years has destroyed the Military competence.

A lot of good soldiers have thrown up their hands in disgust, and walked away.

Not sure about this event.

I agree. Even Hartsfield in Atlanta is incredibly scary for a regular private pilot.

My CFI took me down there "for the experience." I'll never forget it - "Cessna 50T cleared to land runway 9 right. Delta 556, watch for Cessna 150 on short final." - I looked back and my rear windshield was full of 727!

We must assign blame, because this never should have happened. Blame may be uncomfortable, but it is necessary.

Blame leads to accountability which leads to improvement.

“ADS-B on the Blackhawk was turned off”

It was on. Flight tracking apps showed the helo altitude leading to the collision. Notably, altitude appeared to be over 100 feet higher than the permissable maximum altitude ceiling given by flight restrictions for helicopters along that Potomac corridor.

I still say it’s a stupid training mission to fly around a busy airport and cross the incoming flight path of landing planes.

Agreed.

Fox just showed the pic of the leader of the helicopter crew. 1,000 hours of flying under his belt.

Starting to look like ATC put the helo pilot in a bad situation and failed to warn in time. So perhaps it's Bettegeig's DEI policies after all.

“Starting to look like ATC put the helo pilot in a bad situation “

That’s what I think, too. It’s kinds the only thing that makes sense for now, without more info.

The President would not have pointed out the lowering of standards for hiring practices of air traffic controllers if he did not have information of this horrible deadly crash. This will end up as another situation after evaluation that he was correct.

I saw a video later that showed tracking of the helicopter, so clearly ADS-B was on. Strike 1 for the Blackhawk pilot.
