Anxiously anticipated federal data on student achievement show that children continued to lose ground in the years after the pandemic, particularly in reading, a troubling finding that has fed competing political narratives about education in America.
The sobering report released Wednesday from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, sometimes called the Nation’s Report Card, showed that the path to recovery remains far rockier than experts had hoped — especially for students who were already struggling the most.
The data showed that reading scores, which had fallen dramatically from 2019 to 2022, fell again in 2024, with a record portion of eight-graders scoring in the lowest category for proficiency. Math scores rose a bit for fourth-graders — a bright spot — but were flat in eighth grade compared to 2022.

It’s not just Covid.
It’s the entire failure of the entire educational system that focuses more on DEI and brainwashing kids than educating them.

path to recovery remains far rockier than experts had hoped...
Proof the experts can’t see the obvious.
Ping!..................
Bad parenting.
Kids are just the grist for Deep State’s diploma mills.
More parents need to wise up to that fact.
COVID-19 is the scapegoat for failing test scores. It has been going down for years.
Our school district has 4% math proficiency 11% reading proficiency. Handwriting is illegible.
Public schools are not teaching the foundations of reading, writing, and arithmetic, and majoring on the minors.
Watch it there! Most people want to blame someone else.
Well, having seen so many clips of what is teaching kids, I imagine an actual education is at the bottom of their priority list.
Oh, I forgot to add that students speak 17 different languages. How did that happen? /s
Education reform needs to be a top top priority. It's languished way too long.
Students aren’t recovering from covid related school shutdowns.
Thanks to the teachers unions, and the democrat school boards.

thats a academia/commie mission accomplished.
I played high school football. Played college football and rugby. All it got me was arthritis in my ankles 45 years later.
That kid should have talked to me. He wasn’t missing anything.
Its the end of public sector education as the catch all, the spending is not worth the results. Class sizes have been reduced as asked over the past 3 decades and the performance is worse. The quicker the money can be distributed to students to buy a publicly financed al la cart education from private vendors the better. If public schools remain they have to compete in a system with a dashboard that should be done quarterly. If a student is failing standarized testing monitoring from outsiders should step up. Making the student accept they have to actualy take the test instead of presenting answers quickly might bring a ton of schools go from failing back to the mean.
As a young man, I went to a private education “night school” add on to public school, it took less than a year of 2 hours a week of private tutoring to correct my shortfall back to way above the public school mean. My parents spent about 10% of what it would have cost just to send me to private school for customized education in late 70s. Every failing school student should have some account to pull 10%-20% of per student spending to correct problems privately. The results of that spending should be shared publicly.
They can’t handle the common cold? What is wrong with their immune systems? Did someone get vaxxed and have their immune systems degraded as a result?
It’s not COVID. It is the complete undermining of the US education system as a dumbing down platform and Left political agenda. As America progresses to be increasingly fat and lazy and no personal discipline plus demanding less rigid standards of meritocracy, so goes the nation.
Bringing back a mandatory military draft will straighten people up to figure out priorities, values and more importantly...maturity.
Our local, bloated, expensive, failing democrat city school system has their hair on fire about Trump’s deportation program
They have issued a notice, in about 15 languages - including Arabic, Urdu, Somali, Bengali, Burmese, etc... about student and parent rights on their immigration status.
It is THIS, not Covid.
We have turned America into the lowest common denominator possible.
