Pete Hegseth Hints At Restoring Original Confederate Names Of U.S. Military Bases [Fort Bragg et al]

In his first remarks as President Donald Trump’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth referred to two U.S. military bases by their former Confederate names, appearing to hint that he might possibly restore them.

Speaking to reporters on Monday ― his first day on the job after being narrowly confirmed by the Senate ― the National Guard veteran laid out what he envisions for the Pentagon under Trump’s administration. Hegseth expressed support for the president’s executive orders that would scrap the military’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, reinstate soldiers “who were pushed out because of COVID mandates” and create an Iron Dome-like missile defense system for the United States.

“Every moment that I’m here, I’m thinking about the guys and gals in Guam, in Germany, Fort Benning and Fort Bragg, on missile defense sites and aircraft carriers,” the former Fox News host said. “Our job is lethality and readiness and war-fighting.” …

Nobody can recognize those renamed forts. Have to put their old name in parenthesis after the fake name so we know what place they are referring to.

The point of this election was to put a stop to future steal attempts.

Where did the 20 million Biden voters go?

They have all been deported by Trump in the last two weeks because Trump hates LGBTQs. So, he rounded them all up and sent them back to their home countries.

Bragg originally was a Mexican-American War hero, so that’s how he got an installation in his name.

Fort Bragg started as an artillery training center; Braxton Bragg was NC most famous artillery officer and a hero of the Mexican war. The naming of the base had nothing to do with his performance in the war between the states.

I always wondered why a major post was named after him.

Bragg's reputation was made during the Mexican-American War, this was not the first post named for him.

My Oktoberfest Band played the Fort Bragg Oktoberfest last year.

We have done so many times.

Unless, of course, the name change is from Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

Restoring the Nation’s history. More than just names.

Remebering those encampment names meant shed blood, and honor, and sacrifice to a lot of people whose family names still grace our towns and counties and lakes amd valleys and schools and are an essential part of one concept, one entity:

America

Some of its inhabitants are ashamed of it, want to hollow it out, take away its meaning, want to make it something else.

My feelings on this kind of thing, the erasing of history, mirror my own personal views to a large degree.

I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. I’ve done stupid things. Bad things. Inconsiderate things. And even reprehensible things.

But all of those things, as unpalatable or as negative as they might be, are part of me. Those things, in combination with the intelligent, good, generous, and decent things I have done in life are what make me...me.

All those things, good and bad make me who I am.

And I don’t want to eradicate those bad things because they are part of me. I don’t want to celebrate those things. But neither should I shy away from looking them in the face and remembering how they have changed me as a person, and for the better. That I learned from those things.

I feel the same way about our country. Slavery was bad. But it is part of who we are, and all that goes with it. I would like to think in the end, dealing with it has made us stronger. And better.

And people like Lee, Bragg, and others who were part of the Confederacy are just as valuable to who we are as a nation as Grant or Sherman are.

I find the concept of erasing history for whatever reason to be cowardly, repulsive and alien. It is part of what makes us American.

I hope someone at each installation was smart and saved the old signage and stationery.

See my post just above. I think it is important and valuable to remember those things.

Having someplace named after a Confederate General makes me think of how we were able to fight that war and come together as Americans after that. That means something to me. I believe it made us stronger.

That's a valid argument. And it's something that Hegseth needs to point out. After all, he's a soldier who respects our history. He'll make his decisions. Then he'll have to explain on why he made them.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence says "All men are created equal."

So far as most people are aware, that is *ALL* it says.

Not a word in people's understanding about independence, which after all, is the sole purpose of creating it.

It says 13 slave owning States had a right to secede and form a Confederacy.

But most people think it is a statement about "equality" rather than a right to independence.

Yes, absolutely do that too. The Navy never should have named a ship after a pedophile.

“I was just reading about Bragg - he was the worst general the CSA had, and contributed to their defeat. Only Jeff Davis liked him.”

Hood as an army commander is right up there with Bragg. If they’re going to rename Ft Hood again, they should go with Audie Murphy, the greatest Texan hero of all.

I’ll still call it Gulf of Mexico out of habit.

This is no big deal and most people will still call it Gulf of Mexico.
