I don't hold a lot of stock in what scientists predict.
In my experience, it’s been less the actual scientists crowing about these potential cataclysms than it has been “Ma and Pa” type alarmists who take what the scientists say, accuse them of being involved in a cover-up, and go on radio at 2:00 in the morning telling all the half drunk bug-eyed Skeeters how the world’s going to end.
“Conspiracy Theorist” is a VERY well-earned epithet in MANY quarters.
Yellowstone Volcano - is a real thing, but the time scale is geologic, so it’s MAYBE a “yes” in the next 1,000 years. When it pops, ain’t nobody getting away from it anyway, so you’re only ruining your life worrying about it.
Mammoth Valley Volcano - ditto, but lower impact.
Cascadia Fault - coastally cataclysmic, and 75%+ likely within the next 100 years. Don’t buy on the Pacific Coast below 100ft elevation.
“The Earth is Flat.” == “I’m an argumentative little troll with the personality of a gnat.” Shun with extreme prejudice.
“Never Went To The Moon” == “I’m SUCH an idiot you probably shouldn’t let me pump gas. Meth might be an improvement, aktchually.”
Space Aliens - Well... TECHNICALLY, God nor any of the angels come from anyplace around here, so... But other than them...? Nah.
... and on, and on it goes.
All the dynamic achieves is the growth of doubt as to the existence of anything like an actual Authoritative Source of Truth. The endgame is that nobody will believe anybody, and it’ll be a global free-for-all ripe for any actually organized group to sweep in and take up the reins of power and put everyone under subjugation. Likelihood is something on that scale has potential in the next 100 years. While we’re distracted with the curtain of stock-in-trade politics, all those far-left batshit crazy people we’re ignoring are continuing to build their hive below the social radar.
