The mountain was named after McKinley in 1896. The McKinley name stuck until President Barack Obama’s administration changed it to Denali as a symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives on the eve of his Alaska visit to highlight climate change.

[[I expect Trump to do a lot of renaming to point us to our heritage]]
I hope so too! Tie the left up in endless fruitless battles to oppose him on things like name changes to distract them from more destructive efforts.
That’s right, people can call anything whatever they want, and local nicknames are common. The maps will call it the official name.
Call it whatever you want. Frankly, I didn’t realize we even changed the name from McKinley to Denali—(which I thought was a GMC Brand SUV)
Note to Alaskans...
If you want to get your knickers in a knot about something, hows about the fact that your vote to repeal RCV was stolen?
Just a thought.
From "Zorro, the Gay Blade" ...
"Roads? Why do the people need roads? They never go anywhere ..."
Agreed, they push forward in hundreds of fronts every day and there needs to be pushback on as many as possible
Denali is not a river in Egypt.
They can’t make us call it Denali either. We’re non-indigenees. I’ve always just called it a big (honk)ing mountain.
Because he is a dictator?
Maybe there’s something about President McKinley the cabal doesn’t like.
I have a different name for her
Most of the people in Killeen feel the same way. Fort Hood Street (Old 440) is still named Fort Hood Street.
“We named our great peak Mount McKinley, after William McKinley of Ohio, who had been nominated for the Presidency, and that fact was the first news we received on our way out of that wonderful wilderness. We have no doubt that this peak is the highest in North America, and estimate that it is over 20,000 feet high.” (William A. Dickey, “Discoveries in Alaska”, Jan 24, 1897, New York Sun)
Why he called it for McKinley instead of something else, such as himself or “Big Dickey”, seems to be explained by his narrative. At the time Dickey (and others) on his exhibition were likely Republicans, McKinley had won the party’s nomination for President, and they were the first American citizens there to see the tallest mountain in the USA so they made the call.
He was an explorer/miner who got his start at Dartmouth & Princeton & he was a very skilled chess player & baseball player. He did lots of mining of gold, silver, and other minerals in the northwest USA, partciularly Alaska, and settled in Seattle where he died in the late 1930s.

Should we go and do everything the way that the Amerinds did? Many tribes used to do gruesome human sacrifices and all sorts of atrocities in their tribes and to people of other tribes. Personally, I think we should move forward, not backwards.
And besides the word of these Native Alaskans to describe Mount Everest or other towering peaks is the same - “denali”. And its wrong IMO to capitalize it and the only people who capitalize “denali” are dishonest history/lingustics revisionists.

Get the opposition into a dither about this keeps them running delightfully in circles -- always going Left. :)
You can change the name to Commanders but...
“Because he is a dictator?”
They are so brainwashed.
Well, there’s a deli where we grew up. Candy store, egg sandwiches. Beer
Turkey on rye w Russian dressing lettuce and tomato no skimping on the turkey
It was Sam’s. In the 1960s. Sam is long gone. But we call it Sam’s. My brother in law new in town calls it Harbor Deli. What is he talking about
But it’s not a hate America not a hate white guys thing
Death by 1,000 paper cuts. Trump should (will) ignore them and move on to something else to jab them with.
This naming business is a big deal to them because for them everything is symbolism over substance. They whine over this while he has moved on and is fixing real problems.
“First, there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain
Then there is McKinley”
Are we talking about Mt. McKinley? I think we are; talking about Mt. McKinley. That is a good name for Mt. McKinley.
