In the Old Testament, prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah & Daniel were very concerned with Babylon because of its threats to Israel, both physical and moral.
In the New Testament's Revelation, the Apostle John again refers to Babylon, but now we are led to believe he really means Rome, which had then replaced Babylon as the greatest physical & moral threat to Jerusalem.
Indeed, the two Jewish Revolts against Rome (66 & 132 AD) reduced the Jewish population of Israel by at least two thirds and destroyed the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
However, by the time of Diocletian's Great Persecutions (circa 300 AD), only Christians were being singled out for suffering and death, and so clearly to them, "Babylon the Great" meant Rome.
That ended with Roman Emperor Constantine I's 313 AD Edict of Milan, 326 Nicaean Council and Theodosius' 380 AD Edict of Thessalonica, among others establishing Christianity as Rome's official state religion.
Centuries later, the Roman Church itself was sometimes connected to Babylon, notably during the Avignon Captivity, aka "Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy" from 1309 to 1376.
Avignon, France, is about 75 miles northwest of the WEST and ITER fusion reactors at Cadarache, France.
So, what can we make of that loose connection?
I personally wouldn't make anything of it.
Strict9: " I assume if anyone is going to get fusion right, or even come up with energy sources even better, it will be the Europeans."
It's an absolute crying shame if Americans give up on being at the forefront of scientific exploration and development.
US natural resources are huge, but not infinite and eventually we will need abundant new sources of energy in some form.
Construction began in 2010, now planned to be operational in 2039 -- this project is taking on aspects of a Medieval Gothic cathedral, like Notre Dame in Paris, which took centuries to complete.

I would say that Babylon is a figure or type that can be attributed to other cities/nations
Yeah, yeah. Sure, sure. Of course it did. /sarc
(1) The beast is in no way named as the Antichrist, and that labeling is inconsistent with the only times the bible uses the term “Antichrist.”
(2) Beyond circular reasoning, there is nothing to support the notion that Europa is the whore Babylon simply because she rode on a bull. There is no precedent in biblical esoterism for referencing non-Jewish literature and riding on a bull is hardly unique to the rape of Europa. Besides riding a bull, none of the key elements of the story of the rape of Europa are in the whore Babylon, and none of the key elements of the whore Babylon are in the story of the rape of Europa.
(3) Ten nation confederacy? Europe is up to 27 already. CIS? Including Ukraine or some independent portion of Ukraine, you’d have ten. Supposing the Gates of Alexandria separated the Roman world from Gog and Magog, Russia could be identified as Gog and Magog. The deception of Gog and Magog would then be communism, which also appeared to have been mortally wounded by a head wound and threatens to rule again.
you and I will just have to agree to disagree. If the beast isn’t the Antichrist, who is He supposed to be? The guy from Youtube?
Without the anchor of DEI around their necks and with the threat of bayonets at their throats, the chicoms are probably in a good position to beat us at this venture...
In addition, having been educated in American Universities, worked in top secret American laboratories, and the overt stealth of most American secrets, the chicoms are in a better position for fusion control than the U.S. is...
Maybe but given culturally they are just not innovators and there scientists have shown that repeatedly I have my doubts about China research ever making many serious breakthroughs in anything.
You need some kind of society that enables such thought to get such results typically.
Even Wernher von Braun was stifled under Germany and he had a war economy behind him, also note Germany failed to get the Bomb before the US, such cultures really limit innovation.
If you want to follow a naming convention and just decide to call a random evil character from Revelation “the Antichrist,” go ahead. There are plenty of names for things wherein the name doesn’t exist in the bible, but the concept does. It’s just confusing to use a word that already has a different meaning. Why not simply say “the Beast”? Or is it
“the Prophet”? Or “the Whore”? The Abomination? And see, that’s my main problem: people just attribute to the antichrist any old attribute from any evil in the bible, and it all gets mishmashed. I wouldn’t even mind so much if they referred to “AN antichrist” and simply just stop glomming all the references together into one big confused ball.
Well actually you bring up a great point, that there are two of these future folks, The Beast and False Prophet. Most folks think of the Antichrist and think of the singular. Also, yes, there is the spirit of Antichrist which has been around for thousands of years. Satan doesn’t sleep. I’m a Protestant by the way, I assume you are not? Since I’ve been on freerepublic, I’ve learned that Protestants and Catholics are not in the same page on a great many things. I appreciate your opinions. We have lots in common I’m sure.
We should know in a few years.
Being from a farming family, your comment comes close to home.
I still have quite a few cousins in out in the fields.
None that I know of have bought in to the new computer controlled farm machinery.
Their operations are too small and even the used stuff is too expensive.
One cousin's husband still works his small farm after retiring as a mechanic working on over the road diesels and farm machinery.
He still does work on machinery for neighbors and friends.
I find it interesting that the Ford N series of farm tractors first produced in 1939 are still common and parts are still easily available. The engines can easily be rebuilt by your average backyard mechanic.
That can't be said of any tractor produced today or likely one produced 10 years ago.
