The original mission of the Central Intelligence Agency, when created by the National Security Act of 1947, was collecting intelligence, but for 77 years, it has conducted covert and para-military operations around the world. Many believe that the CIA is the heart of the Deep State which runs our government, irrespective of whomever “we the People” may elect to office. The techniques the CIA developed and perfected overseas — including toppling governments — are usually described as “Operations” or “Projects.” Although highly classified at the time, the public has learned about many of those activities, which are summarized here as best as they can be reconstructed from public sources, beginning with the effort to topple President Assad, which recently succeeded.
Today’s article covers the CIA’s operation opposing the Assad regime in Syria and five other projects or operations from the past. Next week’s article will cover many additional CIA operations or projects which have been disclosed to the public.
Operation Timber Sycamore (2013-2017)
This operation against the Syrian government, begun more than a decade ago, may have been “the most expensive covert operation since the Cold War ended.” “From 2013 to 2017, the CIA spent over $1 billion trying to strengthen ‘moderate rebels’ against both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and anti-American extremists in the opposition.”
One of the oft-repeated accusations against Assad was that he was so cruel that he had “gassed his own people.” Like most information about targets of our Deep State, this turned out to be false. Even Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in 2018 admitted “[w]e do not have evidence of it.” Nevertheless, to justify the continuing operation against Assad, the charge continues to be made by neocons in the press six years later.
Just this month, CIA has achieved the toppling of the government of Syria led by President Bashar al-Assad, leaving a power vacuum that is being filled by Islamists led by HTS. While President Biden has taken credit for and gloated about the end of what is always called the “Assad Regime,” the truth is that the actions of the CIA have led to the installation of a radical Muslim government headed by a former terrorist, on whose head (Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani) the United States had placed a $10 million bounty. The results have been brutal. Videos have shown surrendering Syrian soldiers being gunned down by Islamists. The country of Syria appears is being partitioned, with Israel and other neighboring countries taking land from the Syrians. The fall of Assad could result in an unmitigated human catastrophe for Christians.
President Trump has stated on social media “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT.” A UN report published in August 2024 stated: “HTS detained men, women, and children as young as seven. They included civilians detained for criticizing HTS and participating in demonstrations,” and cited “reasonable grounds” that HTS committed “acts of torture and cruel treatment, as well as passing sentences and carrying out executions” without a proper legal process.
A Greek Levantine Christian activist says, “The situation is dire and two of our largest towns, which amount to a population of approximately 50,000 people, have been evacuated … Christians in Syria need urgent help … for now, it seems they are still alive, but the last time the city of Aleppo was besieged, they were targeted and killed.” He also claimed “mainstream media has always claimed they are ‘moderate rebels’ when in fact we know they are neither moderate nor rebels. They are the same militants that beheaded women and children, just rebranded with new names.”
Operation Paperclip
In the fall of 1944, the U.S. launched a secret mission to secure German weapons, including biological and chemical agents, as well as recruit top Nazi doctors, physicists, and chemists. “Roughly 1,600 of these German scientists (along with their families) were brought to the United States to work on America’s behalf during the Cold War.” President Truman had banned recruiting any Nazi members or active Nazi supporters, but U.S. Government agents “bypassed this directive by eliminating or whitewashing incriminating evidence of possible war crimes from the scientists’ records.”
Operation Mockingbird
The CIA ran Operation Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic American media, by placing CIA operatives within news organizations and cultivating relationships with prominent journalists. Overseen by CIA Director Dulles, Mockingbird had a major influence in over 25 newspapers and wire agencies, including CBS, Time and Life Magazines, the New York Times, the New York Herald Tribune, the New York Post, and the Washington Post, and Hollywood film companies. The Church Committee identified over 50 U.S. journalists who were employed directly by the Agency, and claimed many more enjoyed a very close relationship with the CIA, who were “being paid regularly for their services [or provided] occasional gifts and reimbursements from the CIA.” Although Mockingbird officially ended in 1976, in 1996 Congressional testimony, Ted Koppel, ABC News Anchor, said “the Agency has … broken American laws in the past, and I have no doubt that it will continue….”
Operation Bloodstone (1948-??)
This covert operation sought out Nazis and collaborators living in Soviet-controlled areas to work undercover for U.S. intelligence. “In reality, many of Bloodstone’s recruits had once been Nazi collaborators who were now being brought to the United States for use as intelligence and covert operations experts.” The Bloodstone recruits were not low-level Nazis, but leaders, intelligence specialists, and scholars who had been key to the Nazi cause. “Some of them eventually became U.S. agent spotters for sabotage and assassination missions.” State Department official George F. Kennan testified many years later, “it did not work out at all the way I had conceived it.” Documents about this project were released in April 2021.....SNIP
Will President Trump be successful in changing the course of this organization?
bkmk
The reason we are not subjected to Communist Russian today is partly due to Operation Paperclip.
Note that the Russians also grabbed up as many Nazi scientists as they could.
Much better than what went on in the aftermath of the fall of Saddam Hussein when someone hunted down and assassinated Iraqi scientists.
Did they attempt to kill President Trump? If so, what element is responsible.
An interview with General Flynn and Sam Fattis might shed light on that possibility.
It’d be like steering a herd of feral cats.
I have no problem with what the CIA did during the Cold War regarding the takedown of the Soviet Union since one side or the other was going to win. As to the Nazi scientists, we were clueless in rocket engineering and we likely would have lost the Cold War without their help, and especially if they sided with the Soviets.
The stuff they’re doing now, particularly in Ukraine, should get them jailed.
Poisoned fruit is still poison.
“Poisoned fruit is still poison.”
Losing the Cold War means no more country - I’ll trade a poisoned apple for that.
Believe what you will.
Soviet Union wasn’t nearly as powerful as they were portrayed, in order to create the MIC mess we have today.
“Soviet Union wasn’t nearly as powerful as they were portrayed, in order to create the MIC mess we have today.”
They didn’t need to match us, just needed the capability to lob a few firecrackers here - which they CLEARLY HAD.
What they were VERY EFFECTIVE in doing was their long-term project of trying to isolate the West from their raw material suppliers in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia (once Global-Homo took over the State Department, the Democrats were effectively doing what the Soviets had done to isolate us). Long-term, that would have made them stronger, and us weaker, so it had to be stopped...hence my support for the CIA during the Cold War.
Since then, their adventures, particularly Ukraine, seem much more like ‘make-work’ projects, rather than anything at all to do with actual threats against the US.
Did we reform the Gestapo after World War II?
Nope.
We eliminated it.
Eliminating the CIA is the best option. It is the heart and soul of the Deep State.
That is what President Kennedy tried to do.
President Trump needs to finish the job.
The problem with accepting the “poison apple” is that most of the poison is highly classified and in special access programs.
You have no idea what that poison really is.
The only way to find out is to eliminate the agency.
That is nobody’s fault—it is just the real world we have inherited.
Yeah, it’s tough. While Russia obviously wasn’t and won’t be a threat (with Trump in office, at least), we still have China to deal with, and for them I wouldn’t mind seeing our side ‘getting cute’ a bit, as we have a lot of interests there (as opposed to Russia’s backyard).
The Intelligence Community was described by Matthew Pines as an “archipelago”.
It has became vast and sprawling—and compartmentalization has created thousands of little fiefdoms that are often in conflict with each other as much as foreign adversaries.
The whole system needs a complete overhaul.
Post Church Committee the CIA “split” into the “legal” agency with an army of lawyers making sure they were in strict compliance with Congressional wishes and a “black” agency—mostly contractors doing the real dirty stuff with minimal supervision. I do not see how you can even get to the “black” stuff without shutting the entire agency down since it has become one giant smoke-screen.
