You realize the Feds can now Censor Free Republic?
FR (For how long?) ^ | Jan 18 | RF

Dismayed by the amount of support the TikTok Ban is getting and a Unanimous decision by the men and women in black robes further alarms me and will just embolden the Feds and Congress to engage in more online censorship.

How come some (most?) Freepers don't see this? Are you still watching the networks and believing the foreign entity stuff?

You understand that the legislation is broader than that?

How? It’s hard to undo an Act or law like this and the damage is largely done

Pretty scary that that cesspool is America’s favorite app.

It’s close to the truth

I’m being provocative but it can likely will happen at some point just so like many examples

Really old saying: “If they say jump in a fire would you?”

Whilst im disappointed in a few of them I don’t care. A ban is still wrong and that law is dangerous on the books

Re: 41 - as posted yesterday, the section you cite is a severability clause. That does not say that certain sections can be ignored. It says if they are “held invalid”.

You can only censor those who want to be.

Is Free Republic a red Chinese company?

“The only thing that should happen, if Tik-Tok is to survive is to buy it from the Chinese and go through its data like a fine tooth comb to deweaponize it. Otherwise, it should be allowed to perish.”

Well-stated.

No but can be deemed under foreign influence im sure due to donations, web traffic and such

I know its contorted but the Feds did this with FISA and PATRIOT act why do think they wont again ?

You put a lot of faith in the writers of such peverse language and laws

I’m sure the lawmakers who crafted FISA in the 70s never thought foreign meant domestic, but it did not long ago.

And eminent judges even nodded it through in secret

Maybe there is a lesson

“I’ve never used the app.”

Neither have I, but I know that most of the best memes, videos, etc., I see on other platforms are from TicToc.

It scares me to personally interact with TicToc, or buy from Temu because of the clear China connection.

Re: 89 - yes, those are really the only options, unless Congress votes to rescind the passed legislation.

“be manipulated and played for the fool. Just like the Patriot Act”

I think that everyone on this forum was terrified of the Patriot Act from Day One. The probability that it would be used AGAINST patriots was clear.

The issue is foreign control of the data. That’s a bit different. Might feds abuse the decision? Absolutely. But let’s describe it accurately.

I dont like the website so never even looked at the App

Auto-loading videos, etc. yuck. Not for me but hugely popular with others and many Americans (170 million)

Many creators who will lose an income too lets not forget that

Wrong on a lot of levels in my opinion but the Feds and politicians look to have got their way and it’ll disappear or more likely be sold

The law stays on the books for the next time they want go after someone.........

Wow, I did not even think about USSC nominations. This means Justice Thomas can retire knowing there is a great chance his replacement will be good...hopefully.

Although I’m bitterly disappointed he did not provide a spirited dissent in this case.

The joke is that the U.S. doesn't so much want to shut down tik Tok for illegally harvesting data as it wants the Chinese to sell tik Tok to a derpstate backed US company so that the derpstate can harvest that data. You know, gobble up any of that data it isn't already haresting from Facebook, google, instagram, apple, every telecom, internet provider, every front door ring camera, every store self checkout, every traffic light camera/license plate reader, every credit card or bank card company...
