I had not heard of Catherine of the Erie before. I had read that the name Erie meant “cat,” and this confirms it.

I didn't realize that either, honestly. I guess it's an Iroquoian word for cat? Hmm....

I’ve been looking for a plausible etymology throughout the Iroquoian languages and haven’t found anything.

I think Erie/Arriga is probably an Iroquoian borrowing from Algonquian Allegheny.
