Bob Uecker, the legendary radio voice of the Brewers who had called their games since 1971 and was nicknamed “Mr. Baseball,” died on Thursday, the team announced.

He was 90.

Uecker was beloved for his sense of humor and gained national acclaim for his role as announcer Harry Doyle in the “Major League” movies.

A Milwaukee native, Uecker was an MLB catcher for six seasons, playing his first two years with his hometown Milwaukee Braves and winning a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964.

Uecker was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 as the winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, which honors a broadcaster every year.

He was quite a character and was great as the Indians announcer in that movie... “This guy threw at his own kid at a father-son game.”

One hit one word censored hit. You can’t that on the radio. It’s ok, nobody’s listening anyway.

“Low, and he walks the bases loaded on 12 straight pitches. How can these guys lay off pitches that close?”

And now he IS in the front row.

Yep. Thank you, Bob, for all the joy you gave us. Tell Madden, Billy Martin, and Lite All-Stars who have gone before you but whose names escape me we said hi. Look forward to meeting y'all up there.

The syndicated series “Greatest Sports Legends” once did a tongue-in-cheek installment on “The Legend of Bob Uecker.” At one point, the interviewer asked Uecker about the trade that sent him from the Phillies to the Braves. Uecker said the Phillies were very reluctant to trade him, that it was an extremely difficult decision to make. The interviewer than asked Richie Ashburn about the trade. He responded by saying” Are you kidding me? We shopped this guy around for months, begging other teams to take him. The Braves agreed to the trade after we found some compromising photos of someone in their front office.”

Uecker said that he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, right out of high school, for $3,000.

He said it was hard for his family to scrape up the money, but they managed it!
