Rubio says both Russia and Ukraine must make concessions to end war
Guardian UK ^ | 1/15/2025 | Andrew Roth

Marco Rubio said that both Russia and Ukraine will have to make “concessions” in order to reach the peace deal promised by Donald Trump as he offered a full-throated defense of the president-elect’s vision for America’s role around the world – and his own hawkish record on foreign policy.

Rubio, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, told the Senate foreign relations committee that the war in Ukraine had become a “stalemate” and “has to end”; that the US should show China that it would pay “too high” a price for invading Taiwan; and that European countries have to stop treating US support for Nato as an “excuse to … spend on domestic needs”.

Speaking on the war in Ukraine, which Trump had vowed to end within 24 hours of taking office, Rubio said that there was “no way Russia takes all of Ukraine” – but also that Ukraine would not be able to retake all its sovereign territory held by Russia.

In order to reach a peace deal, Rubio continued, “there will have to be concessions made by the Russian Federation, but also by the Ukrainians and the United States.”

US sanctions on Russia may also enter the discussion, Rubio said, noting that they gave Washington “leverage” over Russia and that they would “have to be part of this conversation in terms of bringing about a … resolution”.

Sounds like agreement with stated Vlad’s objectives from day one, he keeps his ethnic Russian provinces and of course Crimea….the next part? No NATO for St. Z, and then somehow purge Ukraine of their Neo-Nazis….

Sounds good to me.

Tucker Carlson bashed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s justification for invading Ukraine, claiming that the “denazification” of the country was “one of the dumbest things I’d ever heard.”

Russia is keeping every inch of territory it possessed and NATO will not be allowed in Ukraine.

What do Zelensky and Ukraine get?

Zelensky and cronies will be allowed to escape to their mansions elsewhere in the world.

The electric grid will be restored in Ukraine and conscripts will no longer be rounded up and sent to certain death on the frontlines.

Dear Little Marco,
Russia invaded Ukraine, now you want Ukraine to make concessions? What are you smoking?

The optimum concession would be for them to meet somewhere and, jointly, commit suicide...

The Ukrainians will not agree to a treaty without genuine security guarantees, so even if NATO is not immediately in the offing, some other arrangement will be made that is comparable.

You will also have to give of the parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia you seized in exchange for the remainder of Luhansk and Donetsk.

How much do you want to bet on that? Put up or shut up, Marcus.

I have a better chance of winning the Powerball lottery than that happening and you know it.

European countries can provide those guarantees. We’ve done more than enough.

You’re probably right about the territory swap. It’ll be interesting to see if Zelensky’s bluster on that point finally falters.

Rubio: "The truth of the matter is that in this conflict, there's no way Russia takes all of Ukraine. The Ukrainians are too brave and fight too hard and the country is too big. That's not going to happen. It's also unrealistic to believe that somehow a nation the size of Ukraine, no matter how incompetent and no matter how much damage the Russian Federation has suffered as a result of this invasion, there's no way Ukraine is also going to push these people back to all the way they were on the eve of the invasion, just on the size dynamic."

The real start of the Ukraine war

Ukraine’s 2014 coup was CIA’s political mistake — Putin

The Russian president noted that the US agency had achieved its goal of changing the government but failed to see what it would evolve into

MOSCOW, February 9. /TASS/. The 2014 coup d’etat in Ukraine was orchestrated with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and became the US agency’s political mistake, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with Tucker Carlson published on the US journalist’s website.

Putin said that during the unrest, which broke out in Kiev in the winter of 2014, the United States asked him: "calm Yanukovich down and we will calm the opposition. Let the situation unfold in the scenario of a political settlement."

"We said, all right, agreed, let's do it this way. As the Americans requested, Yanukovich did use neither the armed forces nor the police. Yet the armed opposition committed a coup in Kiev," the Russian leader continued.

The coup was orchestrated "with the backing of CIA, of course," he added.

"Technically, they did everything right. They achieved their goal of changing the government," Putin said. "However, from political standpoint, it was a colossal mistake. Surely it was political leadership's miscalculation. They should have seen what it would evolve into."

"I think one of the deputy secretaries of state said that they cost a large sum of money. Almost 5 billion," he added. "All this could have been done legally, without victims, without military action <…> We would have never considered to even lift the finger if it hadn't been for the bloody developments on Maidan.

The political crisis that broke out in Ukraine in November 2013 later became known as Euromaidan. Large-scale opposition protests quickly turned into violent riots. The political crisis led to a state coup in Ukraine and the country’s partial disintegration in the winter of 2014. Residents of Crimea voted to secede from Ukraine and reunify with Russia in a referendum. Also, an armed conflict with Ukrainian nationalists broke out in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, prompting their inhabitants to eventually proclaim independence and join Russia after referendums in 2022.

Rubio absolutely is speaking for Trump.

If you got a problem that, then you have a problem with Trump.

BTW, everything that has happened in Ukraine is result of our meddling. We fomented an illegal coup there an installed a government hostile to both Moscow and ethnic and culturally Russia part of Ukraine.

Trump himself has acknowledged that Russians have every right to object to a NATO build up on its borders.

Repeating false narratives aren't going to make them true.

That won't involved NATO or Ukraine will cease to exist.
