As LA fires rage, Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass are targets in the blame game

When catastrophe strikes, its victims understandably want to know how and why — but their curiosity often morphs into snap judgments and witch hunts by those with ulterior motives.

The horribly destructive wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles County neighborhoods have become fodder for irresponsible, fact-free finger pointing, mostly aimed at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Social media have erupted with vituperative attacks on both figures, alleging that they, either by actions or inactions, allowed the firestorms to destroy thousands of homes and claim dozens of lives. One expertly produced fake video depicts Newson and Bass playing fiddles, Nero-like, while the city burns.

President-elect Donald Trump started the campaign of misinformation by very quickly pinning the fires on Newsom, who has been one of his sharpest critics. But his broadside made absolutely no sense.

It’s a slightly different story vis-à-vis Bass.

Battle-tested Los Angeles faces fires that challenge its resilience and sense of community
by Jim Newton
Despite official warnings that Los Angeles faced a major wildfire risk due to dry conditions and seasonal high winds off the desert known as the Santa Anas, Bass traveled to Ghana as part of a U.S. delegation to a presidential inauguration. Moreover, she traveled despite pledging during her campaign for mayor in 2022 to curb her penchant for world travel while in Congress, as the New York Times noted.

When the fires erupted, Bass was thousands of miles away. She rushed home but the political damage was done.

Bass also was publicly criticized by Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley for not providing more money to bolster firefighting capability. If the department had more money, “we would’ve been in a better position” to battle the fires, Crowley told a television interviewer.

All of that said, if Bass had stayed at home rather than junketing to Ghana, would it have made any difference when fires erupted? Probably not.

It was just what political pros call bad optics, and it will haunt her if she seeks another term next year.

from the article, some one gets thrown under the fire truck.

It is exhausting to play the blame game...................

Hey, Dan, let’s see how much we can dilute the idea of leadership.

Every single member of the Sacramento crime gang and the California congressional delegation should be in the LA acting as real leaders in any conceivable way then can. Instead they’re content knowing you’ll give them cover.

The wildfire problem has been building for over twenty years. These two just happen to be in charge right now so they’re gonna get crucified.

I have no sympathy for them - they have continued along the same path - but they’re going to pay for twenty-plus (thirty?) years of political stupidity and idiot voters.

I’m enjoying the show.

Sorry it is not a game. We aren’t playing a game of pin the blame. We know who is derelict in their duties which has nothing to do with blame. The writer is using rhyming words to appear smart but doesn’t even look cute.

As sworn deputies and agents of the public trust, both have violated their oaths
in both word and deed. The author of this article calls it a 'witch-hunt' when it's
just a matter of responsibility. Newsom and Bass are arguably criminally
negligent for this entirely avoidable man-made disaster and manufactured
perfect storm.

“and who is the management now”

In other word’s who’s to blame. Home insurance companies deserve some blame because they’re supposed to consider the risk when determining who to insure and how much to charge.

Oh well ...

Mr. Walter, please don’t insult our intelligence.

The Democrats have been in charge of California for decades.

They through their policies created the conditions to allow a fire to destroy a large portion of one of our major cities.

You know this to be true but you yourself are seeking to blame others for the failures of the Democrat policies.

"fodder for irresponsible, fact-free finger pointing, mostly aimed at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom."

Imagine the nerve! Thousands, if not millions of people attempting to assign responsibility for the failings of State and local governments on the very people that are responsible for those State and local governments. Das ist verboten!!

Most homes have been lost in the Eaton area. Not the celebs. The focus however has been on the celebs and reality TV stars, their ritzy neighborhood. These are the people who can afford to start over. People like Kim Kardashian who can water a lawn all day long cause she can pay a fine and think nothing of it, then go shopping for another designer handbag that cost more than an average person’s weekly salary. Some can start over many times over if they had to.

But some 7,000 homes are lost which belonged to families who can’t rent $3,000 a night hotel rooms, must less a $300 night room, or just fly over to Vegas or Aspen or wherever. They do actual work for a living. That’s the real story here.

Newsom and the mayor, and I’m sure some clowns in both the capital and city hall are very responsible for this.
