Gen Zers are increasingly becoming pet parents now that raising human babies feels like more of a pipe dream—and it’s propelling a job into the spotlight.

Veterinarians have struck gold, ranked at No. 1 on this year’s Best Jobs of 2025 report from Indeed. The study looks into which roles offer the highest salaries, sustained growth, and flexibility—and thanks to generous Gen Z pet parents who only want the best for their fur babies, veterinarians have made (and topped) the list of best gigs for the first time ever since data collection started in 2019.

Out of the 25 ranked positions, vets are also the most prevalent in the market, with 1,065 job postings per 1 million total jobs. Meanwhile, job shares increased 124% between 2021 and 2024.

Why do dogs need grooming?

Don’t most dogs get along fine without professional grooming?

There are no instructions that come with a curry brush. generational knowledge has not been passed down and lost.

Okay, but why hire a professional groomer?

Can't the owner buy the correct tools and do it himself?

A raw food diet is really what is best for your dog. Along with some kibble from one of the better brands sold by companies like Chewy.

We feed our dogs raw chicken backs. These are what is left over at the chicken processing plant after they remove the wings, legs, and breast meat. My wife buys them in a 30 pound freezer box. She then breaks(chops them in half) them down into one gallon bags. Then they go into the freezer in the basement.

You give them to the dog RAW. DO NOT COOK IT. A dog is no different than a wolf. They will break up the bones which are okay as long as you do not cook them.

We also feed them ground up raw dog food that comes in what is called a “CHUB”. It looks like a big baloney tube. They come in a couple different sizes. Again, this is scrapes from the meat processing plants all ground up.

Keep in mind we are currently feeding six beagles and three Chihuahuas. This includes a Beagle that was just recently returned to us after a year. We also have 1 or 2 boarders at the house currently.

I’ve seen some really bad results from diy grooming. I think the dogs knew how bad they looked and were embarrassed.

FYI, VET school is harder to get in than human medical school.
It is also very expensive. Especially the really good VET schools like Cornell.

Your fur babies are never going to be able take care of you when you are old.

Neither are your skin babies.

That’s what I do. I have a goldendoodle and I just keep her face trimmed in the winter and clip her down with #10 blade a few times in the warmer months. I’m older and have arthritis and I can manage this a few times a year.

My son and his wife (married almost 2 years) have three dogs, spend a fortune on grooming, vet bills, flea meds, food. The vet bills alone are costing them $1000s per year.

They complain they can’t afford to have a baby. I honestly don’t think a baby would cost as much as their dogs, lol. Especially, if you shop consignment sales, etc.

Isn't salami raw? :) Yea, that makes sense. And you're right these dog food companies can make lots of money, look at the growth of Farmer's Dog Brand recently.

“ Animals can’t vote democrat either.”

I Think My Dog’s A Democrat Lyrics
[Verse 1]

Well, I think my dog’s a democrat
And it breaks my heart
To have to say
An ugly thing like that
But there’s a big old pile of evidence
That all points toward the facts
My dog might be a democrat

[Chorus 1]
I pay for all his health care
And I buy everything he eats
I provide him with a place to live
Just to keep him off the streets
But he just acts like he’s entitled
Even tried to unionize the cat
Yeah, I think my dog’s a democrat

[Verse 2]
He chewed up the Constitution
That I keep on display
And every time Benghazi’s on TV
He looks the other way
(”What difference, at this point, does it make”)
I know he’s a liberal
Even if he won’t admit it
He pooped on my living room rug
And tried to tell me George Bush did it

[Verse 3]
He ain’t got no papers
And what really gets my goat
Is if he could find a ride to town
Well, I know they’d let him vote
Sure we’ve had some good times
He’s been fun to have around
But if he ever barks
About my right to bear arms
I’m gonna have to have him put down

[Interlude]
(Who’s a good boy?)
(Who’s a good boy?)

[Chorus 2]
I pay for all his health care
And I buy everything he eats
I provide him with a place to live
Just to keep him off the streets
You’d have to be a Socialist
To ever act like that
So my dog must be a democrat

[Verse 4]
His behavior has been hinting
His mom might be Mrs. Clinton
(”Oof-oof-oof-off, oof-oof-oof-oof”)
Yeah, I thing my dog’s a
Spread-the-wealth
Government-health
Flea-bitten democrat
Dangit

Depends on the kids. Hubby and I took care of our parents, but I for sure wouldn’t bank on my kids doing that for me (my oldest says he wants to, but we will see)

Exactly! It is about gratification now and eating out and stuff like that there.

College students are the worst. Many abandon their pets once they move out after graduation.

I don’t know about your kids treat you or how you treated your parents but I offered to let my mother stay with me whenever she wanted to as long as she wanted to if she ever needed it. My ex-wife’s family did the same with her grandmother. Something a dog, cat, or guinea pig will never be able to do.

“they are becoming “pet parents” because they have refused to grow up”

Bingo. It’s not about money which is why being a vet is so lucrative. It’s about not being able to deal with real resp I usability and emotional growth.

As a pet care professional, this report doesn’t tell the whole truth.

Back in 2019 when looking at the job market prospects for anyone entering the pet care career path it had already been projected to see a 27% increase. Then an even bigger event happened in 2020. Covid and the lockdowns had people adopting pets like never before. Sure we’ve seen some get surrendered right back, but many pets were kept as part of the ‘family’ unit.

I don’t think this is a baby substitution issue entirely. There was a tremendous surge in pet ownership over the Covid era.

Couple that with many veterinarians leaving the field due to burnout and suicide. Suicide being one of the highest rates among veterinarians!!
