Seattle Police Department (SPD)'s interim Police Chief Sue Rahr announced on Jan. 6 that she has fired SPD officer Kevin Dave, who was responsible for the January 2023 death of 23-year-old graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula. He hit her in a crosswalk in South Lake Union while going 74 mph in a 25-mph zone.

What’s particularly disturbing are the comments made by a fellow officer of his. The public’s confidence in the police is critical in these uncertain times. This guy sure didn’t help with that.

Wow. Officer Auderer. Aren’t you the POS. I don’t know anything about the accident except what I learned here, but it takes a special kind of special to voice such callous sentiments
His employment is such positions of authority should be ended.
What would you or I receive as a charge if we had committed this same act? Some sort of manslaughter I would assume. If the police are not similarly charged, it is a grave disservice to public trust.
Not at all uncommon for fellow coppers to say (anon, of course) that at least ten% of coppers should not be coppers — unfit.

Speaking from personal experience, I knew a cop that thought a dangerous life threatening situation was funny and made a joke to my face about it. His supervisor had a similar attitude. To this day I have little use for the local PD, which is actually a sheriff’s dept.
I have known a handful of POS cops like this. They make the good ones look bad.
What are the "good one" doing to purge their ranks of the POS?
It’s called gallows humor. I’m not defending it but it’s a coping mechanism for those who witness terrible life and death trauma. I’ve seen it in the military too.

I was an EMT for a short time before moving on to a better-paying job. I saw a bit of that gallows humor. But care was taken so that no outsiders would hear it. And no one ever said a fellow human being had no worth.
This cop is either too stupid to realize that he was being recorded, or he just didn’t care. Either way, he tipped his hand. We all now know what’s in his heart.

As I’ve mentioned several times before, when prospective officers are routinely polygraphed, most admitted to drug use.
My late friend Bob Gately, a long-time MDPD polygrapher, regretfully advised me 26 years ago.
I doubt things have improved, even when prospective applicants of military service are considered.

That lacking anything that resembles a soul.
The civilian police force is not the military and this woman was not in any way his enemy.
I am rather surprised that he did not rape her corpse. All in "humor"

The murder victim was about to receive a Master’s degree in Infomration Science, and by all appearances was a good person working on a successful career and promising future. May Jaahnavi rest in piece. May Daniel Auderer die as a penniless outcast despised by all.
Ironically, the officer killed this young woman by speeding to the scene of a reported drug overdose.
In answer to your question, the newly elected sheriff stated to me that only two of the previous regime’s deputies are now on duty.
The previous sheriff, even though he won countless elections, was the “Boss Hog” variety.
OK, got it on Gallows Humor.
I’ve used it myself. I used to dig graves in rural areas and typically had a helper go down into the hole to level off the grave while I sat up on the backhoe. They were usually young kids, often scared. Knowing this I’d tease them about the next door neighbor reaching through the dirt to shake his hand.
When approaching the grave yard I’d ask them why cemeteries have fences? The answer would be because people are dying to get in.
Dirt was loaded into a dump truck and taken off site until after the funeral. One occasion I was tooling along in the truck, looked in the rear view mirror, and I was leading the funeral procession. I laughed my rear off.
I could go on, but I think I have the drift of “gallows humor”.
