At least 11 people have died as wildfires rage in Los Angeles - and there are fears that number will rise.

Officials say it may take several weeks to identify victims as traditional methods - such as fingerprinting and visual identification - may not be possible.

Here is what we know about those who are reported to have died, according to their family members.

Victor Shaw died trying to defend his home from the wildfire in Altadena, his family said.

The 66-year-old's body was found on the side of the road by his property, with a garden hose in his hand...

...

Rory Callum Sykes

The 32-year-old Australian citizen died when the Palisades fire broke out on Tuesday, his mother Shelley Sykes said in a post on X.

Shelley said she was with her son, who had cerebral palsy, in their 17-acre Malibu estate during the fire.

She added that Rory was in a cottage on the estate and that she had tried to put out the flames, but there was no water coming out of the hose.

11 people my @$$. People in New Orleans know the official body count for Katrina was a joke compared to the real number of dead.

If it were one of my relatives, I would take a picture of their charred remains, as they lay.

Every single day after, i would send that picture to Karen Bass and Gavin newscum. In the mail, posted on social media, whatever it takes to get that picture in front of their eyes.

Every.Single.Day.

Until the end of their miserable worthless lives.

In our neck of the woods it is the Paradise Fire and further up the road in Redding, the fires there....more locally, we have had several threatening wildfires last summer—all arson...Then there was the Park Fire in Chico, more than 400K acres—luckily that arson fire did not destroy many structures.

Up here in Butte County, we empathize with the victims of this fire. The rebuilding of Paradise should be a template—but five years later the numbers don’t lie:

Population before the fire: 28,000 or therabouts The fire destroyed some 18K structures.

Currently maybe five to eight thousand people live there. It will be a generation, (20 years), before the population returns to pre-fire numbers.

The same can be imagined for those parts of Los Angels County. The Palisades, Altadena, etc. It will be a generation before anything is considered “normal” and that is providing there is no hinderance to rebuilding.

Guaranteed though, certain properties will not be allowed to be rebuilt.

It is a shame, isn’t it? Less than a week in the national news then the cameras (and clown reporters) roll on to the next circus.

There is some excellent ongoing local reporting on youtube such as Perma Pasture Farms. But I see that Billy there has not posted anything new recently—I imagine its exhausting trying to keep up with it all.

Fires are sexy, right? Flames and all that—watching parents trying to keep their shivering kids warm in a tent isn’t as compelling. I mean do the reporters get to wear their Emergency Yellow Jacket in that setting?

The folks of North Carolina, et al, are no less deserving than the homeowners of Los Angeles County—no matter the size or type of home.

At least for the folks in Los Angeles, the ground is still there. For some in North Carolina, the very earth where their homes once stood is no longer there— Where did it go?

Do you expect that the LA fires will still be newsworthy four months from now? Are there new developments regarding the people in NC?

Where did it go?

down river, and the property tax on said land (no matter where it ended up) are still due, ontime, in full.

Good post.

Here are some numbers for New Orleans as another example:

Pre-Katrina (2006): 455K

2010 Census: 344K

Today: 364K

See post 12 on New Orleans.

They still have not recovered from Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

Just because it is not covered on the news does not mean it does not matter.

Absolutely NC. It’s frightening to think they have the ability to hide that many dead in this country. This is more 3rd world crap happening right here.

I totally agree and that was my point. There seems to be some outrage because LA is supposedly getting more coverage than NC. But aside from local news and some periodic special interest stories, these disasters don’t remain newsworthy unless there is a new development. I expect it will be the same for the LA
LA fires soon. It doesn’t mean that nobody cares or the victims don’t matter, it just means it’s not “news” anymore. If people have a special interest there are ways to stay connected.
