Why are they doing this?
They’re saying to themselves: I can’t believe I have to sign this crap...
It’s just the kind of people they are.
Because AI generated subtitles probably aren’t union approved.
American Sign Language is more than just hand gestures, it incorporates facial expressions to form the signs as well.
It probably doesn’t sound nice to say, but when watching a live press conference, I generally find those Signers an unwanted distraction from the speaker. I understand that they perform a valuable service to the deaf.
I may be wrong but I think much of it is.performance bulls***.
I find them to be an annoying distraction.
Why not just run the speech as subtitles?
That was a funny episode.
If I recall , for some reason, the “Signer” was yelling his head off, as if the deaf should be able to hear him if he only projected his voice in the right way.
Funny stuff.
Remember the signer at the mandela funeral that was classic
It’s LA. They are probably out of work actors trying to be dramatic.
Silent Haka?...
Just project the news as text. Deaf people are going to have a difficult time to know if they are watching a real time announcement anyway. The signage doesn’t need to be real time....only people who know sign language will know if the signer is correctly translating the speech anyway...
i agree with all the criticism being posted.
it takes all the focus off what the person is actually saying...and it should be stopped. it is RIDICULOUS.
These go beyond normal facial expressions. The faces they’re making are over the top, comical even.
There are non-manual markers that are essential to ASL. Without ASL many deaf folks would be relegated to second class status.
Yes. It’s very painful to watch. It would be interesting to know how many deaf people actually rely on sighing or if this is just theater. I’m not deaf but usually have captions on.
How much money is spent on having signers at every government speech in California? My eyes are drawn to the signer who is usually larger on the screen than the person giving the speech. I cover that part of the screen in order to pay attention to the person giving this speech
How many people who can read American Sign Language cannot read the written word?
