Panel rules in favor of U.S. in GE corn dispute
Texas Agriculture Daily ^ | 8 January 2024 | Jessica Domel

Companies in Mexico are no longer prohibited from buying corn from the United States grown with genetically engineered (GE) traits.

A three-person panel recently found in the United States’ favor after the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) argued Mexico’s action to ban GE corn imports was not based in science and undermined the marketing access Mexico agreed to provide the U.S. under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Mexico argued the ban is necessary to protect public health and Mexico’s native corn species.

If memory serves, seems like NAFTA was a Clintoon era thing so not surprised the result would be disastrous. Perot was correct on many issues of the day yet was nothing but a spoiler in the big scheme of things.

I don’t have rodent issues. I keep TomKat bait stations and I have two cats along with a family of Barred Owls around my property. I do have moles. Grain moths are my biggest concern. (And cabbage moths-worms, those cute white butterflies)
An Entolater solves grain moth problems. I share it with others.

“Constitutional rights for those here illegally? Talk about insanity.”

Yes.... it’s insano on the braino. Those taking that position should earn themselves a Medal of Traitorous Behavior as well as a choice of which other country they’d prefer to be immediately relocated to unless.... they have a genuine and sincere come to Jesus moment. In which case, other options are available on a case by case basis.

GM corn has done amazing things .
The toxic organophosphate stuff I used to use in the 90’s isn’t needed anymore to control insects .
I don’t farm now but used to.
Farmers use WAY less chemicals than previously .

Easy there hoss.... you’re addressing an early-timer FRen whereas you’d be considered a noob.

Cross-pollination isn’t that uncommon and has been going on for millennia. The problem comes in when man thinks he’s smarter than the Almighty and starts manipulating genomes for what generally amounts to greed although this may encompass other nefarious reasons regardless of the consequences. Contrary to popular belief, nature does tend to maintain a balance irrespective of mankind’s follies.

I prefer Heirlooms myself so I suppose that puts me right square in the purist camp.

Mexico’s right on this one so give credit where credits due.

“For most of the world yellow corn is animal feed, not human food. Many will starve before eating yellow corn.”

Curious.... which corn is utilized for ethanol production?

Remember pigging out on yellow corn in my youth. Farmers throughout central Texas would bring in loads of it and essentially have a corn-fest for the town folk from around the area.

I’ve got far more schooling than you mariner.

All crops are gm. Political partisans simply assert which ones are natural and ban accordingly.

Yellow corn mostly here in Iowa but that is all we have, and it has to be very high quality with few broken kernels. else the batch is infected with the wrong microbes, reducing ethanol production. It takes good mgt to run it right.

That would most likely have been sweet corn you pigged out on.

you are fortunate not to have rodents. i keep bait stations filled, but my next door neighbor has a rat feeder (she thinks it is a bird feeder, but what cleans up all the seeds during the night that the birds throw out during the day.) so here is never a shortage of rats. voles seem endemic around here, and chipmunks take the day shift for spoiling tomatoes by taking a bite out of each and moving on while the rats are sleeping.
