Two people have been killed and more than 20 injured in a New Year’s Eve fireworks display tragedy in Hawaii.

Police said they had responded to a “fireworks-related” incident in the Salt Lake area of Honolulu this evening and there were “multiple casualties”.

The incident occurred on Keaka Drive, with officials telling locals to avoid the area. An unconfirmed video posted on social media appeared to show a fireworks display violently ‘exploding’ outside a private residence on the road.

I was traveling through South Carolina and they are allowed to sell impressive stuff. I was tempted to bring some home, but didn’t want a visit from the SWAT team.

Mortars are the big thing now.....very powerful, and legal in many states.

I long for the days when fireworks were illegal in my state.

Mostly because they can really upset pets.

I remember going back to c. 1970 you could still get real cherry bombs and M80s in SC. They were fun!

M80s were crazy dangerous...My cousin stole a case of them from the state wildlife department. They were used to scatter herds before a hunt. We were lucky no one died.

You might want to check your Karen, Karen.

One dumb ass with a match and some fireworks doesn't define an entire industry as dangerous.

You can be killed with a soaking wet towel. Should we out law towels or water because they are dangerous?

Fireworks are tightly controlled on the island of Oahu, where Honolulu is located. Residents must have a permit and a valid identification to purchase and use them. They must also be over the age of 18.

2 people killed is tragic, It is a good case to charge somebody with reckless homicides. They knew the fireworks were dangerous ( could hurt or kill) but they still used them around bystanders.

ladders kill more people than fireworks.we should outlaw the big things before we outlaw the little things.

Oh did 8 mention fireworks in Hawaii are tightly c9ntrolled already????

I must say that was an impressive display. Shame that it had such a tragic ending to it. My father’s younger sister (about aged 7) died of a firework that was thrown at her & caught her dress on fire. My poor grandmother saw her run into the backyard her dress fully engaged in flames though her kitchen window. My father never went into great detail, and I didn’t press him for anymore than what he had offered up.

My neighbor has to sedate her Australian cattle dogs......too bad some people are too thick headed to realize the impact fireworks have on pets.

Started out the New Year rich enough to put on that size of display, but they’ll be broke after paying for all the victim’s settlements.

Hi.

Supposedly fireworks are illegal in HI.

I’ve spent 3 New Years in Honolulu, and the smoke was so dense you couldn’t see Diamond Head.
