more often than not, an unwanted sequel comes out, and it is rarely as good as the original. Although, in a few are better than the original (Wrath of Khan, Terminator 2). Can't think of a prequel better than the original currently.
In any case, which movies would you like to see with a prequel or a sequel?

“In June 2021, it was reported that a second film is in development by 20th Century Studios, a prequel based on the first novel only, with Patrick Ness penning the script. As of October 2024, the studio was looking for a director.”
But I’ve since read it’s not happening. ☹
If you want a really deep dive on Master and Commander by a movie reviewer (Nick Hodges) who specializes in movies based on historical figures and events or based on them, you will want to watch this. I love his reviews as he explains the actual history and where a film hits or misses. And despite a few misses and changes (the ship in the book was not French but American) he loves this film as do I.

A prequel to Donovan’s Reef, I’d like to see how Donovan, Gillhooley and Doc ended up on the island.
“Master and Commander” was an excellent movie.
I agree, a prequel would have been great. Or even a sequel if done well.
Book of Eli
Of course there was a sequel also, "Rooster Cogburn".
Maybe in the prequel, call it "Eye for an Eye", they could get the actor who plays Jack Reacher in the series to play the younger Rooster.
I loved Silverado. It had just about every Western movie tropes possible - the reformed outlaw (Kline), the man wrongly accused (Glenn), the hard as nails yet honest and kind female barkeep (Hunt),along with the saloon prostitutes, the post-civil war black cowboy returning to save his father’s land from being stolen (Glover), the gambler (Goldblum) the crooked sheriff (Dennehy), the wealthy land Barron and the criminals who work for him, the widowed woman in the wagon train (Arquette) and Costner as the crack shot…
It was a bit cheezy, but it was also a lot of fun to watch. A great blend of action and humor.
That said, I had a snap reaction, which was "none of them," and then I realized that I had reflexively reformulated the question into, "What favorite movie of mine do I wish had gotten (or might still get) a prequel or sequel?" That is, of course, not the same thing.
In jumping to "none of them" as my answer, I realized that -- to me at least -- part of what makes a great movie really great is that it leaves me wanting more. Sometimes a lot more. And of course, prequels and sequels are the studios' vehicle for satiating that desire (usually because they see an opportunity for a cash grab). They quickly kill the hunger, and that tends to kill the magic.
This may be one of the underlying differences between movies and television. Obviously there is overlap between the formats, but in principle, movies are all about standalone events that are worth the investment of an evening and the price of a ticket to go watch, versus something structured for casual couch potato viewers who follow an ongoing series that pops onto their screens every week. For years, if the series is good enough to find an audience. Usually until every possible storyline has been run into the ground and the show has entirely jumped the shark.
A great movie tells a dramatically complete story that leaves enough in the shadows that we hunger for more -- and we continue to think about it and return to it because what is left in the shadows is left for us to ponder.
Now I'll have to start thinking about possible exceptions.
I mention them together because they are the same story with different details. I don’t consider it a ripoff, but a send-up, a tribute.
There is yet a 3rd send-up I’ve “discovered” recently: “The Outsider”, with Tim Daly and Naomi Watts; beautifully done!
Of course! So you like “Aliens” better than “Alien”?
I just got the name wrong...:)
I have the Triology, and just re-watched all of them, and I like them in this order:
1.) Aliens: “We’re all gonna die!”
2.) Alien: Very Hitchcockian!
3.) Aliens 3: That was bad. Never watched any of them past this one.
So many things in that parody...Alan Rickman was very good too...:)
Yeah, I just got it wrong...:) Had a lot going through my head last night, like sticking my foot into a river of memory on New Years Eve!
The movies have already been written, all they need to do is cast and film. Best book series ever.
(OK, so how did Khan remember Chekhov?)
In sick bay, Kirk gave him tapes to look at about the Enterprise. He likely studied up on the crew before he took over the ship.
The Jakal, presently on Prime.
better question...If Chekov wasn’t on the Enterprise (doesn’t seem to be a consensus of the Trek world about it), how did he know of Botany Bay ?
Either.
The sequel to “Downfall” would have Hitler on the phone yelling at Biden, Harris, Trump, Obama, and Clinton.
I think it already was made.
Yes! Although the end was set up for a sequel with the young woman heading back to the now ravaged town, I believe a prequel would be much more interesting.
Imagine some early background on Eli and what he was about before or during an undefined apocalypse (no nukes, no viruses, or aliens). How he survived and became the ever faithful traveler carrying the Book to an unknown destination towards the West.
Many opportunities in his travels to introduced new characters and conflicts. Maybe some internal conflict in his own mind as to why he is so loyal/obsessed with his duty to transport the Book.
That movie is begging for a prequel, but only with Denzel Washington playing the lead again.
would be awesome!
The “ Little “ Lebowski.
