Yes when their hides were worth something.
Trappers took care of a lot of them.
Now I just catch them kill them and throw them in the woods.
I used to trap and headlight, starting 69 years ago (I was eight). Coons got me 75 cents, but were hell to skin and nail square on the barn. I got $2.50 for a ringtail, though, and I could skin and stretch one in about a minute. I quit shooting coons, and used ringtail urine to bait my traps, so by 1967 the coons were safe from me.
I got bitten a few times, but I was the one doing the “attacking.” Never had one come after me.
