She had as many hits as the Beatles.
Take a break and have fun, it's Saturday
A hit-making machine without tats, piercings, autotune, or bleeps.
She also released a number of records in French. I recall noting that looking through her records in stores so many years ago now.
I liked her songs. She recorded some of them in French also, and I can remember we sang along with some of them in French class.
This song is about the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where The Beatles played nearly 300 times in 1961-3 before hitting it big.
So much of the music of the past was positive or romantic.
It is so much fun to find this among the posts to Free Republic. The place I knew was the Den of the Hong Kong Hilton in 1970-71. Great place to hang out after 2-3 months in the Delta.
Song of the Mermaid (1952)
More specifically, it was the title of Beatle's manager Brian Epstein's book about his discovery of the Beatles that was out at that time. Epstein also managed Pet Clark, and the lyric "A cellar full of noise" was inserted into the song to promote the book.
The Little Blue Man (1958)
She is absolutely wonderful! Thanks for posting.
I don’t remember that one - cool!
I really like listening to her energetic and happy voice. She has been precious for so many years!
My first knowledge of popular music was right after we got our family’s console stereo for Christmas 1964. I was 9, just barely. I remember thinking Downtown was the greatest song ever and wondered if it might be number 1 forever.
I still enjoy listening to “Downtown”, or anything she recorded. What a talent!
By the same token, my first female shock was Rachel Welch in “100 Rifles”.
At the time, I thought that You've Lost That Loving Feeling by the Righteous Brothers was the greatest song ever. As 1964 came to a close, it reached #1 in Southern California. Shortly afterwards, "Downtown" began to shoot up the charts, all the way to #2. For weeks the two songs battled it out for the top spot, with Petula remaining at #2--and I was rooting for the Righteous Brothers. Finally, "Downtown" began to fade, with the Righteous Brothers still at #1. But in early March 1965, "My Girl" by the Temptations finally knocked them out of the top spot.
