Around 17 Businesses Indefinitely Closed After Santa Cruz Wharf Partial Collapse

Days after a huge section of the Santa Cruz wharf collapsed into the ocean, closing the wharf indefinitely, engineers are now on the scene inspecting the structural integrity of the wharf to determine whether it’s safe to reopen.

"We are undertaking a very thorough analysis of the structural stability of the entire wharf from end to end and from right to left," Santa Cruz mayor Fred Keeley said.

The wharf was shut down immediately following Monday’s incident. Seventeen stores and restaurants have shut down, leaving businesses and employees wondering when they can reopen.

"They're just wondering when they can get back to work and get back to making money and get their job back," Mary Henderson, whose friend works as a hostess at one of the wharf restaurants, said.

Keeley said that the inspection started Thursday morning.

"I don't know how long that will take. It's going to take such time as it will take for them to do it right. Whether that's days or weeks, I don't know the answer," Keeley said.

In the meantime, Keeley said the city is working with its wharf tenants on some financial help that will likely come in the form of rent relief.

"These folks are wonderful, and they're our tenants and we're going to support them economically, but first and foremost, we want to support them by making sure when we open it back up, it's safe for them and their customers. This is not their fault, and we're going to provide them with economic relief so they can keep their businesses going," the mayor said.

Santa Cruz beaches remain closed indefinitely after partial wharf collapse But every day the wharf is closed to the public, that's zero income for businesses at a time when many travelers are visiting the area on Christmas vacation. One traveler from Kansas was hoping to visit his favorite wharf restaurant, Gilda's, but instead opted for the Ideal Bar and Grill at the entrance to the wharf.

"They're probably losing a lot of customers, a lot of business, and closed indefinitely, too, so that's unfortunate for them," Eddie Ryser, visiting from Kansas, said.

Another priority for the city will be to clean up all the debris that is now being thrown up on local beaches including an entire restroom that is now lodged at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River, a contractor has been hired to help oversee that massive cleanup.

City leaders plan to hold a press conference at the entrance to the wharf on Friday at 11 a.m. to give an update on the wharf’s status.

Both. Environmental groups sued to stop any improvements and repairs.

There is no way this opens again. The Coastal commission will not allow it. However, they WILL collect billions to drag out the process to pay off connected cronies and bureaucrats. The state, city and county will sue Exxon, PG&E, and every gas station in the state for “damages” from “global warming.”

The only hope is to use it for importing illegal aliens via boat .

When the city and state find out how much money they will make suing petroleum companies and PG&E for “global warming” they’ll never fix it.

AB 1172 Introduced by Assembly Member Keeley 2001

This bill would impose a timber yield fee upon timber that ...(will) set the rate of the fee by regulation. The bill would require the rate of the fee to produce revenues sufficient to fund the state’s cost of administering the forest practices act. We're taxed once to pay for representation (HA!) and again for the privilege of farming trees.

He's also a career politician.

Phil can’t get his taxes right.

A spokesperson with ABC said that the reason for taking the license away was due to tax delinquency with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

It is wrong to hold anyone accountable for his own decisions, so let’s shower federal money on these people immediately. Too bad it’s too late to add to the CR

(/s for the literal-minded and those from Rio Linda)

“of the entire wharf from end to end and from right to left”
Wouldn’t that be analysis of the wharf from end to middle?
It’s going to be hard to get to the other end.
