LASD, Toyota Sponsor Toy Giveaway for Children of Incarcerated Parents in Los Angeles County, authorities announced Tuesday.Sheriff’s officials partnered with Toyota to deliver more than 1,000 toys.

The toys were collected between Nov. 17 and Dec. 19 and the distribution took place last weekend at LASD custody centers, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Participating employees from the facilities, including the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Men’s Central Jail, Century Regional Detention Facility, LAGMC and Pitches Detention Center, assisted in the distribution.

The visiting centers were decorated for Christmas and offered arts and crafts activities. Children created ornaments, engaged in coloring activities, and were introduced to several holiday treats, such as cupcakes and cookies, provided by the Food Services Bureau.

“When community events come around like the annual Christmas toy distribution, it allows us to highlight the amazing men and women who give selflessly all year long,” LASD Acting Captain Kellee Kicks said in a statement.

“It highlights the importance of community, compassion, and the reciprocal nature of human relationships. Ultimately, it speaks to the power of empathy and strength that comes from supporting one another,” Kicks added.

Your photo reminds me of the old story of the guy who ran a toll booth in Fla. They mailed him a copy of the photo of his tag going through the toll. He mailed them back a photo of a dollar bill. They then mailed him a photo of a pair of handcuffs. Then……………. he paid up!

Sad that the children have the hardship while having nothing to do with the adult offenders who are their parents.

Sibling problems, too. The famous rock music writer Mikal Gilmore kept his name despite the notoriety of his murderer brother Gary Gilmore. Had Rolling Stone cover stories of David Bowie, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin and several books.

Shot in the Heart
by Mikal Gilmore
Synopsis:
Gary Gilmore, the infamous murderer immortalized by Norman Mailer in The Executioner’s Song, campaigned for his own death and was executed by firing squad in 1977. Writer Mikal Gilmore is his younger brother. In Shot in the Heart, he tells the stunning story of their wildly dysfunctional family: their mother, a blacksheep daughter of unforgiving Mormon farmers; their father, a drunk, thief, and con man. It was a family destroyed by a multigenerational history of child abuse, alcoholism, crime, adultery, and murder. Mikal, burdened with the guilt of being his father’s favorite and the shame of being Gary’s brother, gracefully and painfully relates a murder tale....

Children of criminal parents need to know that most people are not criminals and care about them. Not sure exactly how that’s conveyed by toys without a sweet little note about their value and innocence.
