The first round of the College Football Playoff concluded on Saturday with (8) Ohio State defeating (9) Tennessee 42-17 to set up an intriguing showdown in the Rose Bowl against Oregon on New Year's Day in Pasadena.
The common theme of the first round of the expanded CFP was home teams taking care of business. (7) Notre Dame cruised to a 27-17 win over in-state foe (10) Indiana on Friday to set up a showdown with Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia will be without quarterback Carson Beck after the star quarterback was injured in the SEC title game against Texas.

Any of the three SEC teams left out would have been more competitive than the two at large SMU and Indiana because the SEC teams have players, especially on the lines, with the physical traits to be competitive with Notre Dame and Penn State.
Because of the dump seeding rules, Penn State and Texas are double digit favors over the supposedly higher ranked teams while the top seed Oregon has to pay THE Ohio State University.
Trump 2016:The gubmint is run by idiots.
I would add, that goes double for the NCAA.
AND PAY THEY WILL!
For all practical purposes the Oregon Ohio State winner should win it all. But Texas, Georgia, Penn State, or whoever they meet in the later rounds will make it tough.
The SEC showcased their capabilities in Columbus yesterday. Perhaps they should be renamed as the “Little Ten”?
CBS needs to hire an editor, or sharper writers:
“ 6) Penn State (-10) vs. (3) Boise State — Tuesday, Dec. 20 (7:30 p.m. ET): ”
The Fiesta Bowl will be played December 31st at 5:30 pm and can be watched on ABC or ESPN.
Keep my conferences name out of your fornicating mouth.
LOL, now I know which teams I’m going to see right after Christmas all over Southern California - teams from deep freeze areas always seem to enjoy So Cal this time of year - we will be in the low 70s through the New Year.
They all wear team gear so are easy to identify.
LOL!
Now that was Funny.
IMHO, it comes down to if Georgia can play well with backup QB Stockton, which they did well with him in the 2nd half of the SEC championship game against Texas. In fact, most of Georgia's points in that game were with Stockton.
Don't be surprised if the southeast region wins the championship for the 19th time out of 20 years. (2014 winner Ohio State was the only time since 2004 USC that a team outside the southeast won the championship. Except for Ohio State, even when a non-SEC team would win it it was someone in the southeast region like Texas, Clemson, or Florida State.)
Sounding like a grouchy geezer, but the first round was a giant bore. All the teams that were scheduled to win did so; the games were essentially over after the first quarter. No game was ever in doubt, so it was okay to stop watching early. Next time, we should just have a vote for the first round teams and prevent the injuries and frustration.
FCS Championship is different because you have parity among teams.
Maybe the bigger problem is that the least competitive team, Tennessee, should never have been selected.
Tennessee and Indiana should have played, might have been a zero-zero tie however.
Any of the three SEC teams left out would have been more competitive than the two at large SMU and Indiana
Possibly but, losing to Vandy should be an automatic disqualification.
I’m traveling and probably not going to catch any of these games. When your the only footballer in the family, you miss things
As long as the evil Buttsniffers are eliminated, I can accept it.
Though I wouldn’t mind if Texas were eliminated too. They were given a gift of a schedule by the SEC and they’ve gotten awfully mouthy thinking they rule the roost now because of it.
I could only watch parts of each game.
Each time I looked in, the under dog teams were being crushed, on defense and offense.
I am still looking forward to the Penn State - Boise State game.
Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty plays like a First Round NFL Draft pick. 344 carries - 2,500 yards - 29 touch downs.
But, the eternal problem with great running backs - they ALWAYS get hurt.
The main reason for the SEC’s apparent Bowl dominance against the Big-10 is that when they play in Bowl games, they almost always play an SEC home game in hot weather.
The reigning college football champs beat that team down south, 13-10. Heh, heh.
