On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1,000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years.Opera Company of Philadelphia "Hallelujah!" Handel wrote the music but Charles Jennings wrote the words.
Thanks for posting this. One of the most inspiring musical works of all time.

As a mid-level musicologist, I have heard the Hallelujah Chorus a thousand times, and I recognize its greatness, but it's lost its sheen for me. It is the finale, Worthy is the Lamb, that brings me to tears of love for my Lord.
A gospel message production exemplar. Glory to God in the highest.
in German, ‘Handel’ means ‘trade’.
Thank you so, so much for this post.
When I was a girl, 6 or 7 of the churches in neighboring towns gathered and began practicing right after Labor Day for Messiah. There were some choir members with exceptional voices and they sang the solos. This was truly a remarkable group of choirs and the performances were out of this world.
Even as a little girl and up into my teens I couldn’t wait to go and hear this every year. The whole area did- families from 5-95 years-old attended. It was a highlight of the Christmas season and I have loved the music from Messiah my whole life. I know much of it by heart and am comforted, inspired and mesmerized by Handel’s astonishing Messiah.

The story goes that after writing the Hallelujah Chorus he rushed downstairs with tears in his eyes an exclaimed to a servant,”I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself.”
Which if I had bothered to read the article, I wouldn’t have repeated...
