I am sorry, but I disagree. Those troops going back are not good for Ukraine. Unlike many here and elsewhere, I do not try to sugarcoat the situation in Ukraine.
What do I mean?
Putin is an @$$, and he also made one of the greatest strategic mistakes since Argentina decided to move against the Brits in the Falklands and/or Saddam thought Kuwait made a nice addition to Iraq. The Russian economy has been hit hard, and no matter what their central bank tries to do, that cost is growing. It has been a costly error for Russia. A bad move, with many Russians dead, their economy hit hard (1/3rd going into war is a BAD thing for them), their money outside Russia trapped and sanctions weighing down on them, and the good faith they had in the late 1990s/early 2000s all evaporated.
At the same time, I will not make Zelenskyy some sort of modern Churchill. Ukraine has been terribly devasted, they have lost ground (I am not one of those who claims ‘Russia is making marginal gains’ and that ‘Ukraine made a strategic retreat’), and to quote President Trump, Ukraine’s towns are devastated and they have lost 400,000 men to Russia’s 500,000. It is really unfortunate what has happened to Ukraine, and the demographic challenges (alone!) will hobble it for ever. All those young women who have gone to Germany and the UK are never coming back, and losing between 8-10m people to other countries is massive for a 43m country. Fellow FReeper Grumpy says that Russia is also having demographic problems, and that’s true. It’s just that Russia is starting off with 100m MORE people than Ukraine.
It is unfortunate how pro-Russian sources make it look like Russia has won by bringing together the global south and that everything is ok. It is just as stupid when pro-Ukranian sources (like some YouTuber called Denys) literally make it seem like Ukraine is winning every single minute, when even the MSM have finally realized just how difficult things are for Ukraine.
As for the 2,000 dead per day? Where does that estimate come from? Ukrainian sources? The same people (maybe person - Zelenskyy) who claims that Ukraine has ‘lost 43,000 soldiers since the war began.’
Really?
Russia is losing 2,000 men daily, and Ukraine has lost a total of 43,000 - yet Ukraine is getting pushed back, the Independence Square in Kyiv is full of flags to honor the dead, and even Western sources are saying that Ukraine’s number one problem is man power. We see troops that have been fighting nonstop since February 2022, with no breaks, troops that are in their 40s and 50s, and and Zelenskyy refusing to lower the conscription age to 18 (despite the States almost forcefully telling him to) to ‘save future generations.’
But yeah, only 43,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers and 2,000 dead Russians a day.
If people want to believe that, great. No problem. All war is rife with propaganda - some sensible, some silly, and people can decide what they want to believe.
Eg, the YouTuber called Denys something-something. It makes him feel good saying ‘Ukraine is winning against the RuZZians’, and to be honest with you I think he serves an important purpose keeping morale up. Ukraine is fighting for its sovereignty, and it is good to know when they are doing well. It is just silly when it appears he’s saying everything is ok when it is not.
As for Hopium - sure, Russia expected Ukraine to collapse quickly. Three days I think. Even the West thought it would have collapsed quickly. And it would have - if the US and UK (and other European nations) had not massively given Ukraine the equipment and training to punch Putin’s nose hard and leave him all bloodied!
There is a reason Ukraine lost a lot of ground when Congress took long to approve new weapons shipments, and why Zelenskyy HIMSELF said that without US support Ukraine WILL lose.
For NATO - supporting Ukraine was a genius move. As long as things don’t escalate into nuclear war, it has been a massive strategic success. Without a single NATO soldier (officially) dying, they have brought real human and materiel losses to Russia. If we could do the same to China - somehow - it would be an amazing thing since I fear China has learned many lessons from this (both financial and military lessons) that will hurt us some day. But all the same, the Ukraine-Russia war has been a strategic success for NATO. Huge success.
But it has been hell for Russia, and it has been hell as well for Ukraine.
If someone wants to feel better that Russia is (allegedly) losing 2,000 soldiers a day, and that Ukraine has only lost 43,000 in just under three years ….great! If it makes you happy.
Unfortunately, reality does not always align with - what’s the word - ‘hopium.’
Whether the hopium is from the Kremlin, the Verkhovna Rada, Congress, or UK Parliament.
Hopium is hopium, and reality sooner or later settles the books and shows the truth.
Don’t be surprised if President Trump does exactly that. He is very strategic, and that would solve the Taiwan issue for us. I also understand that he has reached out to the Chinese president to attend his inauguration, which is a big thing (even if Xi Jinping doesn’t show up). Really genius move by Trump.
Also, it has been speculated that part of the reason for Russia’s nuclear arsenal is not just for the West, but to a smaller extent towards China. Because that’s the only way to stop the Chinese hordes from streaming like a storm across Siberia.

I disagree. The side being invaded and that is heroically defending itself is clearly the good guy.
