Some states are safer than others in a nuclear attack — this startling map reveals prime targets
NY Post ^ | 12.09.2024 | Hannah Sparks

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst investigated wind and weather patterns to predict the timeline of nuclear fallout, including the paths through which radiation would spread throughout the country.

Experts agree that the Midwest, where 450 ballistic missile silos are stored — particularly Montana, North Dakota and Nebraska — would be the most likely primary target as detonating just two of those storehouses could cause an explosion equal to 100,000 tons of TNT, per Scientific American.

Exposure to radiation poisoning from a nuclear attack would guarantee death for an estimated 300 million Americans within four days of detonation.

Citizens throughout much of Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming and parts of Colorado would suffer death within weeks of exposure to radiation after the silo states get decimated.

My house is 13 miles straight west of Offutt AFB. My college buddy Brad’s dad was a full bird colonel in the mid 80’s and was stationed there with SAC. He told us that the only two cities in the United States that had more missiles targeted at them than Bellevue Nebraska were NYC and Washington DC. This was in probably 1985 or 86 and his son and I both attended the university of Nebraska in Lincoln. I made the mistake of telling him that I was worried about getting nuked. He said not to worry, that Lincoln was a state capitol and also would have some weapons targeted on it. He said it would all be over in an instant and it wouln’t even hurt. Ask stupid questions I guess.....

Launch on warning would make all of the ICBM Launch Facilities empty holes before the first nuke hits them.

The Titan sites at Little Rock have been decommissioned years ago. They are water filled holes by now.

They also neglected the locations of military bases and communication centers, e.g. submarine telecommunication centers (which are not located on big military bases). This is a nothing article.

The map is junk.

The Bad Guys have lots more bombs, lots more targets available.

“I’m not sure that all of our missiles should be targeted outside of the country… ;-)”

lol. True dat! There’s probably a few localized warheads that could make a positive impact on our future.

detonating just two of those storehouses could cause an explosion equal to 100,000 tons of TNT, per Scientific American.

So 100 kilotons for two? That's a rounding error for modern multi-megaton nukes. Clearly the author is an idiot.

I guess the esteemed science community hasn't figured out why we named them Minuteman.

I worked on 'em for 9 years in Montana. They will go as advertised.

I guess the assumption is that anyone who wanted to destroy the US would leave NYC, Chicago, and DC to continue helping.

Oh, stop being so serious! I recall a bit by Bill Hicks where he said only 2 things would survive a nuclear war: Keith Richards (because of all the drugs), and bugs. “I saw a bright light and thought we were on....” (In a bad British accent.) There, don’t we all feel better?

I see Posts about Bases (including Subs) but nobody has mentioned that We have Ballistic Nuclear Powered Submarines each packed with IIRC 24 Tubes (that are 6-7 MIRV’s each ?)

All that is under various “Treaties”.

Found this tidbit:
The LGM-118 Peacekeeper, originally known as the MX for “Missile, Experimental”, was a MIRV-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) produced and deployed by the United States from 1986 to 2005. The missile could carry up to eleven Mark 21 reentry vehicles (although treaties limited its actual payload to 10), each armed with a 300-kiloton W87 warhead.

Anyway We look at this whole situation is if it starts the ENTIRE WORLD IS TOAST, many people will be cooked instantly and everyone else will have slow Fallout deaths.

Which Is what the Malstrom UFO (aka UAP) silo shutdown incident was about. Telling Us to stop being so stupid about Nukes and/or they can shut down everything and We will never be able to use them against ET’s if We feel the need to do so.

So if there’s going to be any more WW’s I say We give the “Leaders” of the Countries Muzzle Loading Dueling Pistols at 50 pacesand televise the whole thing....

They’d ram one torpedoes of these up the Chesapeake Bay and swamp everything from Newport News to Washington with cobalt-60 contaminated water.

We likely have something similar and haven’t made it public.

Status-6 Oceanic Multipurpose System

The Poseidon (Russian: Посейдон, “Poseidon”, GRAU index 2M39, NATO reporting name Kanyon), previously known by Russian codename Status-6 (Russian: Статус-6), is an autonomous, nuclear-powered unmanned underwater vehicle reportedly in production by Rubin Design Bureau, capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads.

I notice central Arkansas appears to be fairly safe even though it has Little Rock AFB and the missile silos all over the counties north of there.

The Titan 2s were taken out early 90s, yo.

Well I am glad. We still have 40 acres of woods down in that area. Haven’t been there since 2008.

Had lots of silos in western Arkansas. Could always tell when driving backroads.

That is a silly map.

Yes it is. No nuclear strike on the Kirkland AFB nuclear emergency stockpile of 5,500 nuclear weapons ready for refurbishment?

What about the two (2) SSBN bases and their storage units with spare Tridents?

What about the Pantex plant, Y12, LLNL, etc?

There should be three to five maps concerning nuclear warfare:
1) Counterforce map 1(anything that can harm Russia, mainly operational nuclear forces, Command, Communications, etc. formerly called bolt from the blue or quick first strike/decapitation strike). This map would include the above references plus Raven Rock, DC, Pentagon, etc.
Counterforce map 2: Further strikes as needed such as any runway over 7,000 feet in case bomber fleet was scrambled or ICBM silos empty....maybe ports servicing SSBNs/SSNs (since they can carry SLCM with nuclear warhead (even though all the nukes are stored in Kirkland AFB), etc.

3) Countervalue targets, to include large cities with large workforce supporting defense industry, transport, communications, rail, etc...such as Amarillo (Pantex), above DOE/NNSA locations, rail yards, ports, etc. Huntsville, AL would be another.
4) Countervalue targets (full strike) : Cities over 500m people, chemical, technology, distribution cities such as Kansas City, Indianapolis, Nashville, Memphis, etc.
5) Terrorist/limited/dirty nuke map by nuclear states such as Pakistan, Iran, NK, etc.
