Former President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2024 Obama Democracy Forum on Thursday night in Chicago. This year’s theme was “pluralism.”
He studiously avoided saying the name of the president-elect, but the presence of Donald Trump hung over the whole event like a particularly grotesque balloon at a Macy’s Thanksgiving parade.
Obama’s characteristic rhetorical virtues were on full display. He was a constitutional law professor before he was a politician, and he still sounds like one. At the same time, he was a once-in-a-generation talent as a political communicator. He knows how to convey a complex set of ideas in a digestible and appealing way.
But there was a massive gaping hole at the center of his speech. He still doesn’t understand why his eight years in power culminated in the rise of Trump. Despite his considerable talents, his brand of centrist liberalism is fundamentally inadequate to the historical moment in which he now finds himself. And his speech in Chicago offered nothing but more of the same.
In Obama's telling of the story of America’s experiment in political pluralism, the system worked pretty smoothly in the 20th century, but all wasn’t well beneath the surface.

Does anyone exist who ever attended one of his classes? He seems to have appeared from nowhere. Such a mysterious-and dangerous- figure.

He attended Alinsky’s seminars the Bay Area with financing from the Catholic Church's Lavender Mafia and Liberation Theology proponents under Archbishop Joseph Bernardin.
Saul Alinsky’s son called him the most adept practitioner of the Alinsky’s community organizing techniques in history.
Both he and Michelle joined prestigious Chicago law firms but soon surrendered their law license in Illinois under murky circumstances and allegations of malpractice and misconduct, which is unheard of for Harvard Law School grads.
Obama was politically well connected into the Chicago Democrat Left so he was given a desk and a make work job at University of Chicago Law School.
He taught two or three classes a year from 1992 to 2004 but he was never more than a part time lecturer at University of Chicago Law School.
The closest he ever came to having a formal position at University of Chicago Law School was a "Senior Lecturer" which is a polite term for an adjunct.
MSNBC fails to mention the point when Obama choked on his own words.
“One side tries to stack the deck and lock in [very long pause]...”
“A permanent grip on power, either by actively suppressing votes or politicizing the armed forces or using the judiciary criminal justice system to go after opponents.”
Mirror politics, accuse the other side of doing the very thing you are doing.

A lot of complaints on this thread of Obama being called “centrist” by this so-called news story. Well, what do you expect from MSNBC? Honesty still continues to be something that MSNBC refuses to do. They seek to manipulate, not inform.
well they were being honest because to them he IS a centrist ...
