Detectives investigating the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson have been honing in on the bike route used by his killer to flee the scene - but one major detail remains in dispute.
Officers probing the early-morning shooting of Thompson, 50, had originally thought that the assailant fled on an electric Citi Bike near the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan.
The New York Times reported that by early afternoon, officers had gathered at the nearby bike share kiosk and were asking doormen for video footage of the station.
Police had said in their initial brief that the killer escaped into Central Park on the electric bike and released an image of the suspect on a bike after the shooting.
That scenario was put into doubt on Wednesday afternoon when a spokesperson for the bike share operator Lyft said that police officials had informed them that it was not from their fleet.
Sources have since told CNN that they have surveillance footage of the suspect on Manhattan's Upper West Side carrying a battery for an electric bike.
They told the outlet that believe the suspect may have taken the subway into Midtown prior to the shooting, and are investigating whether he had a bike already at the scene.
Footage captured of the shooting shows Thompson walking alone outside the entrance to the midtown hotel when the gunman steps into frame and opens fire.
The masked killer draws out a large gun fitted with a silencer and shots him in the back, sending the CEO stumbling down the street.

With the amount of cameras in New York... Tracking this dude should be very easy.
With the way this has played in the news?
I figure they will find the bike before they find him
I imagine his first objective would have been to get to NJ and away from cameras, then switch to different transport.
Looks like he used range ammo...what an amateur!
My guess is that the police are searching all cameras in the area going back at least two weeks. The killer did not just improvise his escape, but certainly scouted it out beforehand. By looking for someone who matches the partial image of the killer from the Starbucks camera, they will get a better view of his uncovered face.
Amateur, not a professional hit: (i) used a semiautomatic instead of a revolver to avoid spent casings; (ii) used a silencer; (iii) fired from too far away, instead of point blank in the head; (iv) gun jammed, not prepared or used properly; (v) ended up on too many surveillance cameras, including at Starbucks; (vi) loitered too long outside the victim’s hotel.

No, used subsonic ammo that did not cycle the mechanism, as he was expecting, then he smoothly cycled manually.
Does the area have stationary NYPD microphones that identify gunshots and locations?
Agree. He was obviously prepared to manually cycle the action from the outset. Not a jam.
Why did Thompson as a CEO of a major corporation not have a security detail with him? Most CEO’s with large corporations have them.

Sometimes plans take longer then expected.
The early details revealed that clearly the shooter was neither smart nor professional.
It was personal.

Shot spotter is used in NYC , yet I see from a quick search , the system has issues with accuracy.
Thanks. I’d forgotten the name.
