“Had the Deputy not been on scene or delayed performing this maneuver the driver and vehicle would have likely gone into the water upon reaching the lake,” stated Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich in a Facebook post.

The driver obviously panicked, but do these new vehicles have some sort of idiotic lockout such that you can't just turn off the engine or shift from drive into neutral while moving?

My newest vehicle is a 2014, so, what the hell do I know about the new ones...

She was applying the brakes. Why wouldn’t the car stop? And what kind of car is this so I can avoid buying one?!

The incident was in Southern IL, so, likely not. Mitch is from over by Louisville, KY — not close at all.

I assume the brakes failed (cops said brake lights were on) and she panicked. (The vid makes that last clear!)

Chevy Malibu, BTW.

That’s what I was wondering; why didn’t/couldn’t she turn off the engine?

I’m no expert, just a driver.
You can downshift an automatic but it will not reduce the gear unless the speed and gear are close to matching. Revving the engine may help.
You cannot select Park.
You cannot turn the engine off unless it is in park.
The emergency brake, if it’s a foot brake may lock up and cause a skid. It’s not an easy maneuver.

Years ago I blew out a brake line and lost all brakes. The E-Brake went to the floor and did nothing. I downshifted and revved the engine to catch the gear. It blew out third gear but caught on second gear. I swerved around a semi and drifted to a stop.

As the sweat trickled down my face and my heart rate returned to earthly, the wife and kids woke up. The youngest said “ Are we home yet?” I could only laugh.

All new cars by 2085 will be required to have reverse thrust front bumpers.

My 2011 Juke, when it was new, ran away with me on my long driveway. I tried everything...nothing worked until I really stomped on the brake, hard, all my weight behind it. That must have jolted whatever was causing the problem. I creeped to the dealership where they fixed it without ever acknowledging anything.

Didn’t watch the video. Is the pregnant driver a man or a woman?

I have come to dislike many of the features on my “newish 2022” car. Just recently, because I had my spouse's key, not mine, it kept moving the seat so I had difficulty reaching the pedals. Reading your comments makes me think maybe I should keep my older car and sell the newer one.

Back around 1976, I drove a mid-60s Pontiac Bonneville across Eugene, OR with no brakes at all. It was the car’s final journey, to the scrapyard. We chose Sunday morning for the trip so there wouldn’t be much traffic, and I drove the thing really slowly, watching far ahead. When I’d have to stop for a red light, I’d downshift the automatic into first, then pop it in reverse to get completely stopped, then into park to stay stopped. It all worked fine, mostly because there were no hills to deal with. I don’t think I’d try it today.

Something fishy going on. Just about the only way to have absolutely zero braking power would require a complete hydraulic failure— on two separate circuits. Even metal to metal will slow and stop a vehicle.

**My 2011 Juke**

While trucking on I-40 in TN a few years ago, a voice came over the CB, saying, “The Nissan Joke, I meam Puke; excuse me I mean Juke. The ugliest car on the road today”.

The truckers that chose to respond, were in 100% agreement. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You can turn the car off it its in neutral, for this exact reason.

I have yet to see a car that does not allow that.
