Lavrov rejects West's ceasefire proposal, calls it 'not a path to peace'

Russia rejected Western claims that a ceasefire would improve the situation in Ukraine, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating that such an action would not lead to lasting peace, News.az reports citing TASS.

"We are growing more and more concerned about what we are hearing from the West lately. The West - Brussels, London, Paris, Washington are starting to float the idea of a ceasefire as a means to give a respite to Ukraine and hence grant themselves a possibility to flood Ukraine with advanced long-range weapons again. Of course, this is not a path to peace," he said at a meeting with his visiting Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto

According to the top Russian diplomat, Moscow is ready for an honest discussion. "We are ready for honest talks, as President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin said. Although he suggested that Zelensky’s sponsors first talk him into revoking his decree banning any talks with the Putin government. As for us, we are ready for talks if they take into account the legitimate interests of all parties," he stressed.

“Lavrov rejects West’s ceasefire proposal, calls it ‘not a path to peace’”

Russia tried that in 2014 and it didn’t work out well for them. So why bother with it again, especially when there’s a good chance for a permanent peace deal.

You mean after they invaded Donbas and then reneged on the Minsk accords by not withdrawing their forces, by not handing over the border to Ukrainian, and by blocking the referendum planned by Ukraine, all of which were required by the accords?

Russia is in an awkward position. Forty percent of their budget is dedicated to war production and personnel costs. Their economy has been destroyed by something called “Dutch Disease.” That’s where one thing dominates the economy and the rest, services, civilian businesses all fail because the employees are working in the war industry. If the war stops then their economy collapses. If the war continues the collapse will occur later. What Russia must have is an end to sanctions and an immediate infusion of cash...a loan. I don’t see that happening.

As long as Putin in charge no sane Western company will move back into Russia. No sane Western nation will ever again become dependent on Russian gas or oil.

Russia is screwed no matter what happens.

A simple cease fire will probably benefit Ukraine if the West continues supplying arms and sustainment.

...

And that is why there won’t be one. The Russians don’t trust us, and know that any ceasefire will just lead to rearming - just like Korea, Cyprus, Kosovo, etc. Conflicts just waiting to restart.

Give war a chance.

Who is it that needs a ceasefire?

About 51,000 Ukrainians Have Deserted Armed Forces This Year

Ukraine needs 500,000 more troops amid slowing mobilization

And just a guess, but I doubt the Russians want to deal with Zelensky's pal, "Dementia Joe", when they can wait for Mr. Trump (who probably doesn't have family business interests in Ukraine)...

I understand what you’re saying, and it is a very uneasy peace in those places. The war(s) fought there have never really ended, just the fighting.

Yet the killing and dying have stopped.

That’s not a bad thing for both Russians and Ukrainians.

Surely Lavrov cannot want it to go on—as it has—indefinitely... Perhaps the Russian government believe they can still win this thing if they persist, and perhaps so.

“What Russia must have is an end to sanctions”

The CCCP was locked out 1947-1990 by USA.

“and an immediate infusion of cash...a loan.”

Russian gold is better than electronic dollars.

“As long as Putin in charge no sane Western company will move back into Russia.”

Russians can make hamburgers & freedom fries.

“sane Western company”

Any left in EU? USA?

GM? Ford? Stellanis? VW? Jaguar?

“No sane Western nation will ever again become dependent on Russian gas or oil.”

EU had plans to phase out fossil fuels even before war.

“sane Western nation”

Hungary would only need small percentage of Russian oil/gas production capability.

The Minsk accords were signed to “give Ukraine time” to strengthen itself, according to ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in office from 2005 to 2021, in an interview published on Wednesday in the Zeit newspaper.

Merkel said “The 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give time to Ukraine. It also used this time to become stronger as can be seen today. The Ukraine of 2014-2015 is not the modern Ukraine.”

“one thing dominates the economy”

military as % of GDP

USA 1944 ~38%
RF 2024 ~8%

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Which is why no one trusts Putin. It should be noted that Russia itself violated the Minsk accords by not removing its forces, by not handing over the border Ukrainian control, and by blocking the referendum planned by Ukraine, all of which were required by the accords. Somehow pro-Russian apologists always ignore this. And why should Russia object to Ukraine regaining control over its own territory?

“Zeepers gonna zeep, all the live-long day.”

They keep trying to re-write history, and for what now? To get Trump to escalate to nuclear war, or direct combat against Russia? FAT CHANCE!!!
