Absolutely! The GOAT when it came to ISDT. RIP Malcolm!
I was racing motorcycles when that movie came out. I already knew of Malcom Smith, but WOW! . . . hat an eye-opener that movie was. My motorcycling friends and I went to that movie several times, this at a time when my personal funds were at a minimum!
Same here. Growing up in Southern Cal, desert racing, moto cross.....JN Roberts was the king of the desert too.

Next to Casa Blanca as one of my all time favorites of any genre!
Yes, Malcolm did it all....even trials!
His passing is hard to hear. One of my manly heroes back in the day second only to Kenny Roberts.
I think there was a scene in On Any Sunday where Malcolm went after a pretty boss hill climb slope. His bike just ran out of 💩 about 3/4 of the way up.
Most participants were crashing/bailing off at that point. Malcolm, still seated, merely turned around and calmly rode back to the bottom. No big deal to him.
Vespa, Malcom riding down that “Widow Maker Hill” in Utah was awesome.
When My older Brother came home from being in the U.S. Army posted in Japan He had been Racing Motocross and when He got Home the movie had just come out and We went to see it, I don’t remember any details of the movie. I was like 8 years old and was really excited that He was Home safely (He served in the Viet Nam days and I was worried about Him being in the actual War on the ground)
When His bike finally got shipped over from Japan We did fair amount of riding and went to the Races in Frenswood,Tx. Then He met His future Wife and We didn’t do much riding and going to the Races after that. But I was a 9 or 10 year old Kid and found other things to entertain Myself.
I used to use his goggles.
He was kind of a big deal to us motorcycle kids in 1973.
Rest In Peace, Malcolm.
Yuppers...
RIP Malcolm
.
Perhaps your riding again with
Steve McQueen.
That is a fitting thought for an exceptional rider.
Yeah, then he got another try and made it up about 3/4 of the way on a stock Husqvarna. Amazing talent. Good guy. RIP.
I was racing MX too at the time. CMC track at Carlsbad was my faves. OAS was so great. On the big screen, the opening scene of Mert Lawill on the flat track blew me away. So sad to hear the news. Malcolm was truly one of the greatest of all time.
Same here. One thing I noticed was in the beginning, Mert Lawill is walking down a street in San Francisco and a pretty girl walks by him and he turns and gives her the eye. I mean it’s obvioius. Then, they show him with his wife in kid a few minutes later saying good bye as he heads out for a race.
I wonder if his wife saw him check out the girl....she had to have. And if he caught hell for it.
We went to the Carlbad Motocross world class race in the early 70s. It was so cool seeing guys like Pierre Karsmakers and Aberg and I think DeCoster.....but what I remember most is the gigantic traffic jam and sitting in traffic for hours leaving that place. Wow.....
Cool. We all wish we could afford a Husqvarna back then. But we didn’t have a rich Dad.
