Donald Trump announced Saturday he would impose a 100% tariff on BRICS nations if they try to replace the dollar in international trade, impacting a group of major developing economies whose members include Russia, India, China and Iran, among others, marking the latest threats by the president-elect to impose tariffs on imports from several countries.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the 100% tariff would affect all BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates—until they commit to not creating a new BRICS currency or back another currency that could replace the “mighty” dollar.

I think the major example was that even if China exports to to a intermediate port to escape tariffs, that the US will put tariffs on China exports coming from that port. The example used was the new China port in Peru

USA imports almost nothing from Russia because of sanctions imosed in 2022.

The exemptions are things like processed nuclear fuel and titanium where the USa has little to no domestic supply.

This is a high risk strategy by Trump as the weaponization of trade to support the dollar has the potential to accelerate de-dollarization.

China and India were shooting at each other over a border dispute recently. Also, China is threatening to dam up the headwaters of the sacred-to-Hindus Ganges river. So I'm not seeing nearly enough trust there to support a common currency involving the Indian Rupee and the Chinese Yuan. Russia is at war with NATO and is sanctioned by all players who count. Brazil is infected with socialism and could start circling the drain at any time. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States dare not even think about crossing the USA because Iran. And South Africa - well, South Africa. What can I say?

I just don't see how BRICS is a threat in any way. It sure strikes me as the merest pipe dream. It's hopium-copium for those on our side who fantasize about the parasitic internationalist order of the global elites getting their comeuppance. I empathize but I just don't see BRICS being an actual thing.
