The first arctic outbreak of the season is allowing temperatures to plunge across the eastern half of the country, creating “dangerously cold” wind chills of 15-30 degrees below zero in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
As the Thanksgiving Day winter storm exits the Northeast, it is pulling in arctic air from Canada and allowing the cold air to travel as far away as the Southeast.
On Black Friday, well over 200 million Americans are expected to experience below-average temperatures.
According to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center, wind chills should fall well below zero across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.
Areas of the Dakotas and Minnesota will see dangerously cold temperatures that could cause hypothermia and frostbite if unprotected skin is exposed. Some areas will drop to between -30 and -40 degrees when factoring in the wind chill.
In the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, temperatures could drop below -10°F, with wind chills making it feel even colder to around -20°F or lower. The coldest days would likely be in the Sunday-Monday timeframe.
Farther south into the Midwest, lows may fall into the teens, and wind chills could dip near -10°F. This could bring the coldest air of the season so far for many areas.
The winds will drastically increase as a powerful arctic front powers through the region on Monday-Tuesday.
Travelers in these regions should be sure to have a winter survival kit.

“...when it’s springtime in Alaska it’s 40 below.....” Johnny Horton, 1960
Duh, just a word for the moronic libs and woke: it’s called: WINTER. The climate naturally “changes” four times/year. It’s called: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each one has different weather. The pubic schools used to teach that kind of stuff waaaay back before they became morons.
FWIW, as a kid, I’ve hunted in eastern Maine on a Thanksgiving day in jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, came back, ate dinner, watched a little tv, went to bed and waking up the next morning to 10” of snow and 15 degrees above. It’s called winter weather, cold fronts, etc...the woke/moronic libs can either get used to nature doing its thing, or do the entire world a great big favor: find an outhouse and just go ESAD.

OK, don’t tell me, let me guess: it’s winter AGAIN! ...
i know, it’s hard to believe, since this has only happened once a year at the same time for the last several million years, you know, just like clockwork!
The Wind Farms, turn them on.
Actually, that cyclical patter IS the climate.
It’s a temperate climate zone and those seasons are normal for it.
I guess some people don’t realize that climate doesn’t mean the same weather all year long.
But I though the Earth was on fire and we’re all going to die?
Sucks living in Montana and having to live through weather...
11 degrees here in MN right now and the wind hasn’t let up much in the last two-three weeks...
It’s Minnesota... We’re gonna get a LOT colder than this.
I recall finding all the dogs in the neighborhood stuck to the car tires.
We used to have to pee walking backwards so we didn’t get stuck.
Sacajaweau sez..
“Please explain to them that weather is NOT the same as climate”
FA sez..
Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get. Today we got -20 here in the hill and -34 down in the flats.
It’s getting down to 60 degrees, sunny and blue skies in my corner of Arizona today. I’m hoping we’ll be able to get through this.
Dude, I live the phenomenon directly. It is not an urban legend. Due to your snark I hope you get the opportunity to try it yourself.
I used to fish on the lake 8n weather -20 to -30 degrees, and work in such weather outdoorsz- wind whipping, so making it even colder. You just dress for it, keep moving, and you’ll be fine. Used to deer hunt in such weather too.
Folks in Alaska and other areas around. The world deal, with much much colder temps in winter. Folks in the midwest no doubt are used to dealing with cold temps.
Heck, we even lost electricity one winter for almost 2 weeks because of a massive 33 inch snowstorm, and it was well below zero, but thankfully we had a furnace that burned wood and kept plenty warm, although the house was quite frigid further from the furnace.
The weather yesterday in Phoenix was fantastic. Cool but not cold with little wind and warm sunshine. Perfect for any activity. Geniuses now and idiots by summer.
My stepson’s in-laws in the Asheville area just got water turned back on earlier this week, and they live IN town not up in the hills.
That’s why I don’t live in phoenix. 😄
Why? Because they went for Trump? How much longer do we have to put up with these monsters?
